Datastore Inaccessible after failure

$

0

We had a failure overnight, I don't know what caused it but all hosts (9 in total) went into a half failed state in that they weren't responding in vCenter but could be pinged. I couldn't restart the management agent from the console so was forced to restart them via iLO.

Once I got all hosts back up, we've been left with one single datastore showing as "Inaccessible" and nothing I seem to do will kick it back into life. I'm not overfly familiar with the logs but it appears to be timing out

VMKernal.log

cpu38:68195)LVM: 15061: Failed to open device naa.600c0ff0001e3c7457b0c45a01000000:1 : Timeout

The Datastore is located on an HP MSA 2040, other volumes from said SAN that are mounted on various ESX hosts elsewhere or Hyper-V Servers have remained up so I know the SAN itself is OK.

I've rebooted all hosts in the cluster (one by one) just to be sure they came up cleanly

The iSCSI targets for this volume all seem to show Active but I did try to remove the targets and re-add them successfully

I had a spare server that I've built from scratch that once I added the iSCSI targets displayed the Datastore in the same Inaccessible state

Hello,

Is there any way I can perform backup of a VM having physical RDM. As physical RDM isn't allow snapshots to create so I am not able to perform any backup.

Is there anyway I can perform excluding RDM disk and take backup of OS disk only?

I am using HPE Data Protector as a backup software.

Hello,

I would like to know if it's possible to exclude files or folders when you snapshot a VM.

We want to try to save some space.

We work on Windows environment (2003, 2008 and R2) and vcenter 4.1, Vmware Backup Host and Netbackup 7.

VDP vs VDR

$

Hi everybody,

i couldnt help myself starting this conversation.

i was very suprised for VDR being shutdown.

i knew VDR would be updated, but was not expectng so soon, since the latest 2.01 was released not so long ago.

i found out VDP was out when updating to vsphere 5.1 and there was no VDR plugin to vcenter.

Anyway i am really dissapointed in VDP, to say the least!

First it depends on SSO and the vmware web client. i couldnt believe: i had to use the slowest gui i have ever used, (not as slow as backup exec 2012 thought!) so much more complicated.

second, you cannot choose the partitions to backup! This is unbelievable! the use i gave VDR was to backup the boot partitions of windows vms!

the other partitions usually have data, that are daily backed up to tape.

so at this time with VDP i have to backup a vm with 700GB in disks, when with vdr i only backup up C: partition with 50GB! hilarious

third, i am obliged to choose between aplliances, that cannot be expanded. In VDR you could mount a partition with any size, anytime!

now i must choose the 2TB VPD appliance because i didnt want to risk not having enough storage in the future, and didnt want to bother having to install more VDP appliances ( they come configured with 4 CPU!)

fourth, it is way harder, not to say impossible, dont know for sure, to reuse a damaged VDP disks, to recover all previous backups.

in VDR all you need was to keep the data partition intact, run a new vdr appliance, mount the data partition from the previous VDR, check integrity and ready to go! VDR lets you use a external disk to store in a safe, using it like tapes!

fifth, minor issue: when backing up, VDP inserts VM costume field "com.vmware.vdr.is-protected" as true

But you know, its not vdr its VDP, and this field should only changed after the backup, not before! and if something goes wrong in the backup, if you try to delete the field, VDP automatically inserts it again.

for these reasons, i am forced to use backup exec, without the miracle of deduplication to backup only boot partitions.

i hope vmware solves these major issues very soon, dedup is precious, and VDR was just right.

thanks

VDP failed to attach disk error

When deploying VDP for a customer, i encountered the problem with disk attachment by VDP.

There is a knowledge base article written, which gives a workaround for the problem. The workaround states that setting the disk.enableUUID=true to "false" solves the problem for now.

But what is the impact of changing this value to false, when by default it's turned on.? How does this affect my VDP backups other that marking it is successful?

Backup fails due to quiescing

$

Hello

Since upgrading our environment from 5.0 to 5.1 we are having problems backing up several VM's

We use the Netvault Backup, with the VMware Plugin, to backup our VM's

When a backup job is run overnight, one VM fails, with the following message:

Task to create VM snapshot failed with reason 'An error occurred while quiescing the virtual machine. See the virtual machine's event log for details.'

I check the VM's event log and the following is displayed

The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 4 The error message was: Quiesce aborted.

The following is what I have tried to fix the problem, all failed:

  • Remove and reinstall VMware Tools on the VM approx 5 times in a row
  • Remove VMware Tools and reinstall without the VSS option
  • Disable VSS backup from within Netvault
  • Manual snapshot of the VM will sometimes work and sometimes fail

We have a backup job that runs every night Monday - THursday, which backs up approx 10 VM's, with 1 failing with the error message.

On a Friday night we have 2 backups jobs that run, which backup a total of approx 30 VM's, with 7 VM's failing with the error message

Any ideas how I can fix this problem?  It's been suggested its something to do with Datastore storms but everything was working before the upgrade to 5.1

Thanks in advance

esxi raid disaster - how to recover my vm's?

Hello

I currently have the following issue:

We have a IBM x3650 server  with two raid 5 systems. The esxi host is installed on the first raid which currently failed (marked as offline). Now that I can't boot into esxi I would like to copy the virtual machines from the second raid but I don't know how to retrieve the files. I booted clonezilla from a live CD which shows me the partition but I can't see any folder or files. Because of unknown filesystem??

However I would appreciate any advice on how to get my virtual machines.

VMDK recovery from Delta file

$

Long story short - a folder was deleted from the datastore which contained the flat and descriptor file for one drive on a server containing very important data. This was also the time when we found out the backups were corrupt. We have the *000001-ctk.vmdk, *000001-delta.vmdk, and 000001.vmdk file for this drive. Is it possible to recover the main descriptor and flat file (or the entire deleted directory) from this?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Corrupted Files after snapshot deletion - recovery

I was attempting to increase disk size on the primary disk of a VM. I followed instructions to delete all snapshots. After I noticed that the disk type went from Thin provisioned to Thick provisioned. After increasing the disk size in the VM properties I powered on the machine and received multiple errors:

An error was received from the ESX host while powering on VM <NAME>.

Failed to start the virtual machine.

Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/NUMBER/NAME.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

The system cannot find the file specified

Module DiskEarly power on failed.

The system cannot find the file specified

VMware ESX cannot find the virtual disk "/vmfs/volumes/NUMBER/NAME.vmdk". Verify the path is valid and try again.

I have attempted to follow the instructions to recreate the vmdk file, but have had no success. Is there any other option to get this machine back?

I had a disk fail yesterday, and after the rebuild I noticed one of my datastores was missing.  I see the device but not the associated datastore.

VDP 6.1 Failing on backup runs - "Failed to attach to disk"

Over the weekend one of our FreeNAS boxes locked up under heavy load.  I have everything running again except for vSphere Data Protection.  Whenever it begins a backup run it will create snapshots and then a few second later remove them and return the error "VDP: Failed to Attach Disk" in the Report window.  I've reviewed the logs, but they make no sense to me.  (I have attached one of them to this post.)

I have run an integrity check on the Data Protection server, all is well.  I have removed any old/outdated snapshots for the virtual machines.  I have rebooted the Data Protection server.  None of these steps have solved the issue.

I need someone more knowledgeable than me to look at the log file and give ma clue/solution to my problem.

Thanks in advance.

I have successfully signed the OVF package with ovftool 4.2. The certificate was signed by a Root CA.

Now the problem is that vSphere Web Client runs into the following error during Deploy OVF Template.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The specified key, name, or identifier 'xxxxx' already exists

Hi,

I have restored a VM (Files) with NetApp Active IQ Unified Manager onto my vsphere 6.7 environment, but when i'm trying to register the VM it says: The specified key, name, or identifier 'xxxxx' already exists. It is a backup from a running vm which has been restored to NFS. But when i'm registering it as a new system (with a different name), this error popups.

Anyone has the same problem, or have any ideas to fix this?

BTW during the restore, the LCK file has been restored as well. When i'm trying to delete this file it says: Device or resource busy

Thanks in advance.

E10007 Miscellaneous Error Backing Up VM

$

I have recently setup a small new virtual environment.  One of the key features is a vDP backup appliance running on a host at physically separate location, with backups being performed over the network.  This allows for backups that are protected from disasters like fire.

I am trying to backup 3 VMs from one host to this backup appliance, using a single backup job.  Two of them are able to backup fine, but one VM is always erroring out with this error:

VDP: Backup job (Main Backup) failed to backup client Main Server.  Execution error: E10007:Miscellaneous Error.

I haven't been able to find much more of value, except poking around some text logs in the vDP appliance I saw some SSL communications errors in the nfcssl protocol.

I should also add that the VM in question is a Windows Server 2008 R2 standard guest OS.  I have set disk.EnableUUID to false, and I'm using vshadow.exe in a script file to prep the VSS for backup during the snapshot process.  However, one of the other VMs that is successfully backing up is the exact same server OS and configuration, and it is working fine.

Both hosts are Dell servers running ESXi 5.1.

Also, this VM is also the largest of the 3 VMs, with a 1 TB partition with about 100GB utilized.  At one point it had an RDM disk attached, but after reading that can cause problems I have detached it and still get the error.

Thanks in advance for any help!

VDP Change IP Address

Can you change the IP address of a VDP appliance?  I have gone in through the web GUI and changed it this way, however, upon boot it is still trying to access its old IP?  I know that in the documentation it states if you pick the wrong address you will have to redeploy, but... that just seems strange to me.

Anyone?

VDP Fails with Error E10052 - Seems VMs freeze while VDP backs up.

Hello Everyone,

So, I'm working with VDP and trying to backup 7 vms. I don't have this issue at any other client of ours. I have a client that the VDP runs at the default time set and fails to backup all the servers. I have yet to have it backup every server without any issues.

The error in vSphere Web Client tells me the following:

VDP: Backup job (*****) failed to backup client ******. Execution error: E10052:Failed to create snapshot.. Job ID: ******************** (Full Client path: )

After browsing around I was able to finally find the avamarclient logs and received a bit more information on the root issue here:

After the VDP Job fails. I notice that the snap is actually there, as I check the Snapshot Manager and see the "VDP-Job###" listed.

So, when I rerun the job manually it goes ahead and removes the VDP-Snapshot. Then begins to re-snap the VM. I know these VMs lock up for less than a minute when VDP runs. I feel as if when Virtual Center is being snapped it freezes the I/O on that VM and makes VDP lose it's connection to vCenter Server and then fails the VDP backup. So, we thought to get another set of 1TB Drives and put them in a RAID-1 Configuration and create another datastore to strictly be dedicated for VDP backups.

Even after this implementation we still are seeing the issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to try to get VDP working properly. Also, I have redeployed mutliple times to ensure it wasn't corruption in VDP itself.

Thank you to anyone who assists !
