Crash Consistent and application consistent backup for the same job

$

0

I'm using VDP 6.1 in ESXi 6 environment cluster to backup virtual machines and I noted the same Windows guest OS has different kind of backup:

Crash Consistent or application consistent backup

E.g. the same job for Windows 2008 sometimes gets Crash Consistent backup and it sometimes get application consistent backup?

So logs show for some day "application consistent backup and for other days "Crash Consistent backup"

What is the reason to get different types of backup for the same job? In this server there is no database.

thanks

Why does the snapshot process hang my VM's

$

Good Morning All,

Thanks for taking the time to look!

I have an issue with numerous virtual servers on our server estate.

When VEEAM backs-up the server it takes a snapshot, when the back-up is complete it removes the snapshot, this then causes the server to hang and loose connectivity for anywhere up to 1 hour, thus causing an outage to end users.

I have approached VEEAM and they advised this was HA monitoring, I have disabled this but still the issue occurs.

I have also disabled CBT (Change Block Tracking) in the VEEAM back-up job which requires that all snapshots be removed, the same thing happens.

The odd thing is, this does not occur on every single back-up, almost on a monthly basis.

Any feedback or input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

San

Hello,

as stated above my backup job is failing and I don't know why.

From the vSphere Web Client I get the following message on the task console:

And from the logs I deducted that the important part is the one below:

Hi everybody

I have installed the vSphere Data Protection 6.1 and since few days the backup of a VM is "crash-consistent". The other VMs don't have this problem and all the backups are "application-consistent".

What is the meaning of this type of backup?

What can I do to solve this issue?

Thx in advance, sincerely Omar

ghettoVCB script not removing snapshots. Please help!

Hello everyone, I have ESXi 4.0 up and running with about 5 guest machines. I've set up ghettoVCB.sh to backup one very important vm machine but I'm running into problems.

I have mounted an NFS share to the esxi host which I'm using as a destination path for my backups, I've set up crontabs to run on the host server as explained in the ghettoVCB guide. When the cron job runs at night it creates a log which i check every morning when I come in. However, the log says that it has removed the snapshot :

Clone: 100% done.

2010-04-07 00:30:58 -- info: Removing snapshot from Orion ...

but when I navigate to the "Orion" folder on the host server I find a bunch of '---delta' files that were not removed, so next time ghettoVCB runs it fails to backup saying that a snapshot for "Orion" already exists. What can be causing this issue? I 've been trying to figure this out for a while, any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Commvault 9 VSA and vStorage API & VCB

$

I've been pilot testing Commvault 9 VSA with both VCB and vStorage API method and have enounctered 2 issues.

I've found an issue where if you try to backup a VM via vStorage that has virtual disks across multiple datastores the backup will not run resutling with an error:  "MACHINE skipped Error with Virtual Machine change tracking. It may be necessary to power cycle the vm, or contact VMware support regarding the QueryChangedDiskAreas API. "

We have not had a chance to enable CBT for any VMs since we upgraded to CV9 and enabling CBT requires an outage.  We have been able to backup VMs with Full and Incremental WITHOUT CBT but this only works on VMs that are contained on one datastore.  Has anyone else noticed this issue with Commvault and been able to fix?  I don't know if enabling CBT will actually fix it or now but there's probably atleast one VM I can do this on but using CBT would be something new here so I would have to tread with extreme caution!

VCB seems to spool it's files to C:\Program Files\Commvault\Galaxy\iDataAgent\JobResults\iDataAgent\VirtualServerAgent\..... which of course results in running out of space and the job failing.  I will take this up with the consultant that helped us but thought this might be useful for others to know.

Cheers,

Dave

Maximum snapshot size

Hello,

I'm currently evaluating the different methods in order to protect one of our virtual machines.  I have a virtualised FileNet server and I want to take snapshots of it. I have tried creating snapshots but I get an 'unspecified error' from the backup software.  A quick search shows that it may be down to the block sizes on the vmware datastore being insufficent, is this correct?  The virtual machine is # 2TB and a file backup takes too long.  The question I suppose is, is there an upper limit for snapshots in vSphere?

Many Thanks

Problem with consolidation, "Cannot allocate memory"

$

I have a big problem with consolidation VM disks, and with VDR at all.

A few days ago VDR was trying to make backup and remove snapshhoot on mail server (1 TB disk), and result was a new 219 delta disks in one night!

Another result of that was that my connection with vCenter is going doing after few seconds I am connected.

After many hours I realize that connection is going down becouse mail server (with 219 disks) is in inventory, althouh it is not powered on.

I can connet directly on esx host, remove VM from inventory and then I can connet on vCenter with that host.

Automatic consolidation did not work (Cannot allocate memory) so I try to manually clone this disk with vmkfstools but after 52% I get message:

"Failed to clone disk: Cannot allocate memory (786441)."

I tried with thin disk (vmkfstools -i ... -d thin) but nothing.

I tried to set parameter VMFS3.MaxHeapSizeMB in advanced settings on maximum.

I even upgraded esx and vCenter on 5.1 version.

I appreciate any advice.

I have a powered on virtual machine that I am trying to copy over into a lab environment without having to power it off. I'm not able to download the VM files using the Datastore Browser in vSphere Client. I get the error: "Expected put message. Got: ERROR". I have tried pulling them from the web based datastore browser as well with no luck.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

For few days VDP has not been able to complete integrity check launched from

web client so I tried running it manually:

1. Stop all VDP services (dpnctl stop)

2. Unmount the mount point (umount /data0X)

3. Run xfs_check (xfs_check /dev/sdxy)

4. Mount data0X (mount -a)

5. start services (dpnctl start all)

6. stop maintenance services (dpnctl stop maint)

7. create checkpoint (avmaint checkpoint --ava)

8. Run full hfscheck (avmaint hfscheck --full --ava)

8b. check hfscheck (avmaint hfscheckstatus --ava)

9. Start maint (dpnctl start maint)

Ref: https://communities.vmware.com/message/2271165

But every time I end up with error:

Last hfscheck failed with result MSG_ERR_HFSCHECKERRORS : started Tue Jan 14 16:02:19 2014 ended Tue Jan 14 20:42:22 2014, nodes queried/replied/total(1/1/1)

VDP version is 5.5.5.180

Any ideas what to try next?

Clean install is also possible, but I'd like to know the root cause for this and avoid it in the future.

Thanks!

My VDP version is 6.1(based EMC).

VDP Backup schedule is not running, because that appliance state is "admin" status.

"gsan" service was degraded. From the logs I can see it might caused by disk full, but even I cleared all my restore points, disk space won't be reclaimed because appliance status is "admin".

Here are some of my VDP state, anyone can help? Thank you so much.

Proxy Error VDP 5.8.4

Hi,

I have updated my vCenter server appliance to version 5.5.0 4180647 for my ESXi 5.5 Update 3b enviroment.

Since that day, one of my two VDP appliances can't backup my VMs anymore.

It is the newer one with the version 5.8.4.6. My older VDP (5.8.0.467) is still working!

The VDP log file reports the error "30983" - a proxy problem.

But in the webinterface the proxy entry is shown:

proxy.PNG

I have SSH into the vdp and asked for the proxy setting. These are my results:

I have restartet the VDP four or five times but no luck.

Also I can't  create a new backup job? The VDP creates the job but the VMs are not added to the job. The error just says, that it was unable to add the client to the backup job.

Any ideas?

vSphere 6.5 VDP 6.1.4 VMware Tools outdated

$

Hello,

This has been an ongoing issue with the last few VDP versions.

I update vSphere to the latest version (in this case 6.5.0 5224529) and then the VMware tools on VDP appliances throws a warning that it is out of date.

I learned the hard way that you cannot simply perform the "Upgrade VMware Tools" automatically... it just uninstalls it and then cannot install the new version.

In the past I would just update to the newest version of VDP (in this case 6.1.4) and the problem would go away.

However, it hasn't gone away...

1. Is this problem really hurting anything? Backups seem to be ok.

2. Is there a KB or something that acknowledges this issue and/or provides a fix?

Thanks!

VDP - backup status

Is there a way to see what the status of each running job in VDP is? I know you can see percent complete of the overall job but is there a way to see which machine is being backed up, which have already been backed up and which proxy it is currently using?

I have 6 jobs that back up about 100 virtual machines and the jobs just seem to sit at the same percentage for a long time. They also seem to take an incredibly long time to run.
