Hello,

as stated above my backup job is failing and I don't know why.

From the vSphere Web Client I get the following message on the task console:

VDP server execution error code: 10055

And from the logs I deducted that the important part is the one below:

/usr/local/avamarclient/var/Backup_test....log

VDP 6.1.2 appliance can't connect to vCenter after initial configuration

I've deployed VDP 6.1.2 and the configuration went smoothly (test connection to vCenter with proper permissions worked successfully), but after the the appliance rebooted it hung at 70% complete for the VDP:Configure appliance task.  In the /usr/local/avamar/var/vdr/server_logs/vdr-server.log the VDP appliance can't connect to the vCenter server.  Any idea as to how to fix this?  Is there a config file I need to update?

CreateSnapshot failed

Hi there.

I am trying to backup my VM systems using the VEEAM backup software.

We have licensed VMware vSphere 4 Essentials.

The guest OS I try to backup is a MS Windows 2003 Server R2 Standard x64 (with an installed MS SQL Express Edition database). The VMware tools are installed in the newest version (v8.1.3 build-203739). VSS was activated in the VMware tools installation process.

If I now try to start a backup job in VEEAM, I get two errors:

First error:

VssGAConn: Guest operation system is not supported, type EVeeamOsXP, platform EVeeamAmd64, version 5.2

Second error (I think this is the "major error"):

CreateSnapshot failed, vmRef "vm-40", timeout "1800000", snName "VEEAM BACKUP TEMPORARY SNAPSHOT", snDescription "Please do not delete this snapshot. It is being used by Veeam Backup.", memory "False", quiesce "True"

Can not create a quiesced snapshot Because the snapshot create operation exceeded the time limit for holding off I / O in the frozen virtual machine.

The veeam-support says this:

"It appears the snapshot operation cannot be performed manually, this would indicate an issue with VMware tools quiescence on that server. You will need to contact VMware support in regards to this operation failing."

I´m going crazy, because I dont know what I can do to solve the problem.

Perhaps anybody can help me here... ?!

Thank you in advance.

VDP: Failed to attach disk

Hi everyone,

I've tried everything I could for the past 2 days and I am still geting this...

VDP_FAIL_17-10-2013 13-34-33.png

I have reinstalled it 4 times so far and still same thing!

I CAN ping from within VDP shell the esxi hosts, vcenter by their FQDN, Hostname, IP and vice-versa

Accidentally deleted .vmdk, anyway to recover the files?

$

Hi all,

I have a VMWare EXi 6.5 server with 3 data HDDs and 1 SSD containing my linux VM.

I used the entire usable area of the 3 x HDDs to create VMFS partitions and then passed over to my Linux VM to create a ZFS pool. I recently deleted my VM from VMWare host management web interface and I noticed that all the .vmdks files for the 3 disk devices got deleted along with it.

Is there a way to recover the ZFS pool or vmdk files? I tried TestDisk and photore but no luck. photorec and TestDisk aren't VMFS aware so not sure if it can recover single large .vmdk. (it recovered bunch small .vmdks though - not sure how valid they are. I looked at them on an hex editor and found they contain some file content).

I have left the 3 HDDs untouched and nothing has been written to it since so I know the content of the VMFS partitions are in tact. Do you think if I create a new .vmdk for each HDDs (utilising the entire space available for each disk) would allow me to re-import my zfs file system in a new linux VM?

Would creating new .vmdks overwrite the important sectors in those 3 HDDs?

VMware NetBackup Errors

$

In vCenter (6.7), all of our successful Symantec NetBackup jobs show with Type "Error".

pic1.JPG

pic2.JPG

We had reached out to NetBackup support and received the following response:

"NetBackup only communicates to VMware via the VDDK API.  From a NetBackup perspective, if the jobs are successful in the Activity Monitor with no errors, then the backup image was created, captured, and stored properly.  Any errors within the VMware environment should be investigated from a VMware perspective.”

We verified the backups are actually successful by restoring a few VMs.

Is there any option to set this particular event "event.com.veritas.netbackup.success.V2.fullFormat" to show a status of "information" instead of "Error"?

BACKUP EXEC v16 cannot connect vcenter 7.0 or esxi 7.0

Hi

After upgrading to VMware 7.0, Backup exec 16 cannot connect to neither ESXi hosts nor VCenetre server. The error messages are "The server was unable to complete the requested operation." and "Possible cause: cannot connect to VCenter or ESXi host".

I checked DNS settings and even changed passwords to a simple one (all based on Symantec posts). Even with wrong passwords, the error is the same. I think VMware has changed Firewall access rules.

Any comments will be appreciated.

Now Available: VMware Data Recovery version 1.0.1

$
0

All,

VMware Data Recovery version 1.0.1 was released today and is available from

http://www.vmware.com/download/vsphere/

Note that updates are happening, so the listing on the page may still say version 1.0.0 .  Go ahead and select Download and after accepting the EULA, you will see the new ISO with Build 17677.

The v1.0.1 release addresses the following

Large Temporary Files Removed as Expected

Data Recovery modifies virtual machines' vmdk files' settings so a snapshot can be created for backup purposes. In the past, after the backup has been created, the vmdk file's settings was sometimes left configured for snapshots even after the backup was complete. This led to these virtual machines being left in snapshot mode while accumulating snapshots that were undetected by vSphere Client. This process has been redesigned so that these temporary files are no longer be left behind. In previous versions of Data Recovery, this issue can be resolved by following the process described in the knowledge base article titled "Delete ddb.delete entries and snapshots left behind by Vmware Data Recovery".

Backups Can Be Completed While Integrity Checks Are Running

Data Recovery can complete backup operations at the same time that an integrity check is running. In the past, when an integrity check was running, backups could not be completed.

Improved Integrity Check Backup Speed

Integrity check has been optimized for faster performance. In the past, comparable integrity checks took longer to complete.

Improved VMotion Licensing Support

Virtual machines can be moved between hosts using VMotion without producing licensing issues. In the past, if a virtual machine was moved between hosts using VMotion, licensing checks sometimes produced errors.

Reduced Data Recovery Backup Appliance Shutdown Time

The Data Recovery Backup appliance now shuts down more quickly than it did before. In the past, the appliance often took 15 minutes to shutdown.

Improved Support for Different Time Zones

In the past, Data Recovery did not consistently handle time zones with positive offsets relative to GMT. For example, Data Recovery could encounter issues with data associated with the Paris time zone, which has an offset of +1, whereas data associated with the New York time zone, which has an offset of -5 was handled as expected. These issues no longer occur.

Data Recovery Supported with Essentials Plus Licenses

Data Recovery is included in Essentials Plus licenses. In the past, using Data Recovery with Essentials Plus licenses failed. Backup jobs created with Essentials Plus licenses failed with the error "License not available to perform operation. Feature hotplug not licensed..."

Integrity Check Optimized to Run During Idle Times

Before running regularly scheduled integrity checks, the Backup Appliance determines if the current time is during a backup window. If the current time is not during a backup window, the integrity check runs. If the current time is during a backup window, the backup appliance checks the backup schedule to determine if there will be a time in the next 24 hours that will not be during a backup window. If there is a time in the next 24 hours that is not during a backup window, the Backup Appliance waits for that time. If there is no time that is not during a backup window in the next 24 hours, the Backup Appliance completes the integrity check.

Second NIC for Backups

Please bare with me as I am completely new to Virtualization.

We are beginning our journey into virtualizing our environment.

Currently 100 Physical Win2k3 boxes which eventually we would like to consolidate down to 50 or so Virtual

ESX 4.1

we have hp c7000 w/ 4 bl490cs,72gb ram in each

San is a hp eva 4400 with two shelves w/ 450gb drives

Our vsphere license is for enterprise plus

I am sure I will have hundreds more questions later but am curious how a best practice we currently use in our physical environment translates into the virtual world.

Scenario

Currently, for each of our physical servers we have always installed a second NIC which was dedicated as a Backup NIC, meaning our Netbackup 6.0 Master Server comminicated with its 100 or so windows clients solely on that 2nd NIC to perform its backup thereby separating and isolating backup traffic from normal traffic on the servers.

Question

We will assume that the Netbackup 6.0 Master Server and its companion Quantum Tape Library will continue to be physical boxes communicating with the VM's living in the equipment noted above.

In the virtual world, once we have moved the physical servers to virtual, would this "dual nic" best practice be either neccessary or even functional ? Would the network traffic generated by the backups truly be dedicated to that 2nd virtual NIC or does it all sit in the cloud anyway and doesnt matter ?

It seems to me that it wouldnt make any difference but before I begin planning my backup jobs I would like to be certain.

Thanks in advance for your asnwers.

Disable Independent Persistent Disk Mode ?

Hello,

I have a VM that is configured with an Independent Persistent disk, this is preventing me from taking snapshots for backup.

I've looked for information on disabling the Independant mode of the disk but have'nt found much information.

Is this because it's as easy as powering down the VM and un-checking the "Independent Mode" for the disk in the system settings?

Thanks in advance for any advice you guys might have.

What is the best way to backup datastores?

I have a few different virtual machines on ESX 4.1. I am looking at backing up the datastores to a NAS drive, preferably the backup would be done automatically (once a week), and should be done withput having to shut down the virtual machines. What is the best way to do this?

Thanks,

Don't use rsync version below 3.0.5 for backups!

When using the rsync parameter --sparse or -S to efficiently copy large VM disk images (VMDK files) you need rsync version 3.0.5 or newer as with older version you get into data corruption without any error messages during the synchronisation process!

This problem was reproduced with rsync --daemon 3.0.4 on ESX and rsync client 3.0.2 on Solaris 10 either on UFS or ZFS.

VDP: Appliance has changed from Full Access to

.......
VDP: Appliance has changed from Read Only to
Full Access. Backups and restores should be fully

and now i'm again in Admin, and any type of Backup fails.
How can I go back to "Full Access" and set the system so that i never end up in Read-Only or Admin State? And  what they mean?
Thanks in Advance

VDP Change IP Address

Can you change the IP address of a VDP appliance?  I have gone in through the web GUI and changed it this way, however, upon boot it is still trying to access its old IP?  I know that in the documentation it states if you pick the wrong address you will have to redeploy, but... that just seems strange to me.

Anyone?

be careful when changing IP address of a VDP appliance

$

There are two ways of changing the IP address of a VDP appliance:

1- via vdp-configure web app

2- via VM console (the blue TUI inteface)

The correct one is the 1- option. If you will do it via 2- (like I did ) you'll end up with broken VDP. This method only changes settings on the network interface while it doesn't change avamar settings ... To fix it you'll have to manually edit IP address in the following files:

/etc/hosts

/etc/sysconfig/network/x-ifcfg-eth0.dpnnetutilbgaux_save

/etc/sysconfig/network/x-ifcfg-eth0.dpnnetutilbgaux_orig

/etc/x-hosts.dpnnetutilbgaux_orig

/space/avamar/var/dpnnetutil.xml

/space/avamar/var/probe.xml

After this reboot the appliance and it should be back to normal.

Anyway, this SHOULD be written in "VDP Administration Guide" and/or noticed in some KB ... or even better ... after VDP is initially configured, changing IP address via VDP console (the blue TUI inteface) should be disabled ... hopefully VMware will fix this someday.

Message "XXX vcbimage.label not found XXX" shown in vCenter

Hello all,

I am using VMware Data Protection 5.5(5.5.1.356), and when I backup a GuestOS using VDP, the following message appears at the vCenter's message window.

XXX vcbimage.label not found XXX

However, the system backup task finishes successfully and there are no other error messages shown.

I have found this KB, so does this message appear because I am using vCenter in an Japanese environment? Is it supposed to show a different message in an English environment? Can I ignore this message as just information message and nothing suggesting any failures?

Dear All,

We have following scenario:

Software:

1) Vshpere 5.5 Std

2) Vcenter 5.5 Foundation

Hardware

1) 2 x IBM X3550

2) 1 x IBM Storwize v37000 Raid 5 ( 2.34 TB)

VM's

1) 5 x Windows Server 2012 Std ( App Server)

2) 1 x Windows Server 2012 Std (File Server)

I appreaciate your inputs about the hardware and software recommended. I´m intresting in backup the VM´s and the File Server files.

Options that I´m considering are:

1) Add Hard drives to the available storage a create a Backup Volume.

2) Acquire a NAS device and perform backups with a Backup Software (Like Veeam).

Many Thanks

ESXi Infrastructure without shared Storage (HA Possible? Backup & Recovery options?)

I have a two node ESXi solution that I want to add redundancy to, the issue is I don't have any shared storage but want to offer HA or at best some disaster recovery options for the customer.

Is HA available without shared storage, if not is there a relatively cheap option to get this up and running (Budget constraints will not allow to add a SAN).

What are people's recommendations for a (On site) disaster recovery solution?

Many thanks.

Please, help my VDP DIsk full issues.

VDP Backup schedule is not running, because that appliance state is "admin" status.
