VDP appliance is not responding issue

$

Hi,

We are seeing troubles accessing VDR from the Web Client. When go to the vSphere Data Protection plugin tab, and click [Connect] for our VDP instance, getting the following error:

     ERROR:

The VDP appliance is not responding. Please try your request again.

Would you like to be directed to the VDP configuration screen to troubleshoot the issue?

Reconfiguring VDP trough vdp-configure appears to connect properly to the vCenter -- [Test Connection] returns success. Does not fix the issue however.

Setup:

- Sphere 5.1.0

- VDP 5.1.1 0.5 TB appliance

Don't know if it is related, but in vdr-server.log we are seeing the below pattern repeating over and over.

BTW, yes, did see the other discussion : VDP not usable after reboot But this appears to be a different issue -- we did not attempt to change any port numbers or anything like that.

Anyone else seeing this?

Any thoughts on what might be wrong??

Hello,

as stated above my backup job is failing and I don't know why.

From the vSphere Web Client I get the following message on the task console:

And from the logs I deducted that the important part is the one below:

How to backup a VM having RDM?

Hello,

Is there any way I can perform backup of a VM having physical RDM. As physical RDM isn't allow snapshots to create so I am not able to perform any backup.

Is there anyway I can perform excluding RDM disk and take backup of OS disk only?

I am using HPE Data Protector as a backup software.

VDP 6.1 Backup Failures

Hi,

I've recently inherited a vCenter environment where a small number of the VMs are being backed up using VDP 6.1. The backups are currently failing and I'm not really getting anywhere with troubleshooting as I'm struggling to get the logs.

The job fails immediately, from inside the vSphere client I recieve;

Reason: VDP: An unexpected error occurred with the following error code: 30983.

Log file retrieved is empty.

When trying to download the client logs from the appliance website I receive the following error:

Download failed: I/O error.

Possible cause could be insufficient disk space. Please check available space on the download location.

Definitely sufficient space. I've connected to the appliance and check the client job logs manually and there doesn't seem to be any there.

There is 8TB of storage available so we've not run out there.

Not to sure where to go from here.

Thanks.

Failed to get disks while trying to restore single files on Linux

Hi,

I'm trying to restore single files from VDP backup of linux machines (vSphere Data Protection Linux File Level Restore - VMware vSphere Blog).

Everything is at the most recent release. When I try to mount the backup in the flash client (https://VDP_APPLIANCE:8543/flr) I get this error:

Failed to get disks: Failed to determine the partition type. Verify that all the disks on the VM have valid/supported partitions

I tried with nodes with various disk structures, but the error is always the same:

VDP manual says that at least ext4 (first try) should be supported. By the way, is it possible that XFS (the default RedHat filesystem) is not supported at all?

Thank you very much!

Hello,

I'm using Veeam Backup and Replication 9.5 on Windows Server 2012 R2. Backup of VMs in ESXi fails due to license problems ("Processing Win7-VM Error: Current license or ESXi version prohibits execution of the requested operation.").

I'm using free license of ESXi 5.5.0 (2403361).

Any hint how to solve the problem is very welcome... :-)

File is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore

$

Hi,

Getting the following error message on running backups through vStorage API (or VCB):

File <unspecified filename> is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore '<unspecified datastore>

Now, I know what you're thinking. VMDK size is probably maximum of allowable on VMFS data store, for example 256GB VMDK on a VMFS with 1MB block size.

All EMC Clariion FC storage configured in the following way: two 1TB LUNs with 1MB block size (LUN1 and LUN2), rest (usually around 1.5TB) configured with 8MB block size (LUN 3). Max VMDK on 1MB LUN is 256GB, max VMDK on 8MB LUN is 2TB.

The 1TB LUNs are used for OS disks of various VMs (that's why we used a small blocksize). The large LUNs are used for large data disks, like D: drive on a large databaseserver where the disk needs to be bigger than 256GB.

The VM in question is configured as follows: HD1 is 24GB and located on LUN1. This is also where the config file is located. HD2 is 600GB and located on LUN 3 (the one with 8MB block size).

The error message above appears as soon as you try to take a snapshot of the VM. Now, this presumably happends because the snapshot process places the snapshot-files on LUN1 (with 1MB block size). This also includes the delta file for the 600GB disk. This is probably why it fails. But.... why? Sure, the snapshot file of the 600GB could THEORETICALLY grow to 600GB (and therefor not fit on LUN1), but the chances of this growing to 256GB is virtually impossible.

Might as well mention that these error messages happen on all VMs where they have the OS disks on a "small LUN" and large data disks on different LUNs. They also never failed when on VI 3.5 update 2; but appeared as soon as the servers were upgraded to vSphere 4. The way to "fix" the problem is to move the 24GB OS disk and config file to a LUN that has 8MB block size; then snapshots work. But that is not a solution I can live with.

I thought I would air this issue on the community before engaging VMWare support.

CreateSnapshot failed

Hi there.

I am trying to backup my VM systems using the VEEAM backup software.

We have licensed VMware vSphere 4 Essentials.

The guest OS I try to backup is a MS Windows 2003 Server R2 Standard x64 (with an installed MS SQL Express Edition database). The VMware tools are installed in the newest version (v8.1.3 build-203739). VSS was activated in the VMware tools installation process.

If I now try to start a backup job in VEEAM, I get two errors:

First error:

VssGAConn: Guest operation system is not supported, type EVeeamOsXP, platform EVeeamAmd64, version 5.2

Second error (I think this is the "major error"):

CreateSnapshot failed, vmRef "vm-40", timeout "1800000", snName "VEEAM BACKUP TEMPORARY SNAPSHOT", snDescription "Please do not delete this snapshot. It is being used by Veeam Backup.", memory "False", quiesce "True"

Can not create a quiesced snapshot Because the snapshot create operation exceeded the time limit for holding off I / O in the frozen virtual machine.

The veeam-support says this:

"It appears the snapshot operation cannot be performed manually, this would indicate an issue with VMware tools quiescence on that server. You will need to contact VMware support in regards to this operation failing."

I´m going crazy, because I dont know what I can do to solve the problem.

Perhaps anybody can help me here... ?!

Thank you in advance.

Problem with consolidation, "Cannot allocate memory"

$

I have a big problem with consolidation VM disks, and with VDR at all.

A few days ago VDR was trying to make backup and remove snapshhoot on mail server (1 TB disk), and result was a new 219 delta disks in one night!

Another result of that was that my connection with vCenter is going doing after few seconds I am connected.

After many hours I realize that connection is going down becouse mail server (with 219 disks) is in inventory, althouh it is not powered on.

I can connet directly on esx host, remove VM from inventory and then I can connet on vCenter with that host.

Automatic consolidation did not work (Cannot allocate memory) so I try to manually clone this disk with vmkfstools but after 52% I get message:

"Failed to clone disk: Cannot allocate memory (786441)."

I tried with thin disk (vmkfstools -i ... -d thin) but nothing.

I tried to set parameter VMFS3.MaxHeapSizeMB in advanced settings on maximum.

I even upgraded esx and vCenter on 5.1 version.

I appreciate any advice.

I have a powered on virtual machine that I am trying to copy over into a lab environment without having to power it off. I'm not able to download the VM files using the Datastore Browser in vSphere Client. I get the error: "Expected put message. Got: ERROR". I have tried pulling them from the web based datastore browser as well with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi All,

I have a vSphere 5.1 environment. I installed VDP Advanced, went through the configuration successfully, but there's no VDP option on my web client. The registration with vCenter said it was successful...so I'm not sure what I missed.

Any thoughts?

VDP SQL Application restore

Hi every one,

I am doing some test with DP 6.0 and the SQL backup, I have been doing some backups but I could not restore any of the backups yet.

Every time is the same error no matter if I do some changes during the restore process.

I can see these lines at the events panel from the vsphere client :

Task: VDP: Restore Job

VDP Restore "VM name" started

VDP server execution error code: 10007 Job name ......

VDP: Restore completed

Could you please tell me where to check if there is another log where I can find more information about this error?

Also, I have done backups and restores for individual VMs and it works fine, until now I have done backups from SQL Application but I could not complete the restore correctly.

Thanks

VDP web interface slow at loading backup jobs

I've been using VDP for the past few years (on the latest version). My backup and replication jobs are running fine, and I perform backup restores about 4 to 8 times a year.

The web access has always been slow. It takes about 15-20 minutes to load the backup jobs tab. And every time I make a change to a backup job the screen has to load again and it takes another 15-20 minutes. What's the deal? Is this normal for you guys?

All my backups are currently going to a Data Domain. I have about 12 jobs that backs up 28 VMs. Can anyone help me figure out why it takes that long to load up the backup jobs list? This also happens in the restore and report tab as well.
