VDP Command question

Hi does anyone know the command to watch an active backup inside VDP in real time?

I remember once there was a command I was able to run that there would be an automatic refresh every X seconds and I would be able to see what the backup is doing

I think it was some variation of mccli activity show | grep Running

Anyone know?

Time Sync Issue with Data Protection Appliance

Hello,

I installed vDP in lab environment to test the product.  Everything was working well for few days.  Since Saturday, I am facing with this error

“the most common cause for this error is that the time on the vdp appliance and your sso server are not in sync”

I checked esxi5.1 host (inside vcenter) to make sure the time are in sync with web client.    I am using NTP (pool.ntp.org) under configuration on esxi 5.1 and NTP client is enabled and running.

How can, I resolve this error.  vDP appliance disconnect and when, I try to reconnect faced with above error.  Appreciate your help

VDP 6.1 Backup Failures

Hi,

I've recently inherited a vCenter environment where a small number of the VMs are being backed up using VDP 6.1. The backups are currently failing and I'm not really getting anywhere with troubleshooting as I'm struggling to get the logs.

The job fails immediately, from inside the vSphere client I recieve;

Reason: VDP: An unexpected error occurred with the following error code: 30983.

Log file retrieved is empty.

When trying to download the client logs from the appliance website I receive the following error:

Download failed: I/O error.

Possible cause could be insufficient disk space. Please check available space on the download location.

Definitely sufficient space. I've connected to the appliance and check the client job logs manually and there doesn't seem to be any there.

There is 8TB of storage available so we've not run out there.

Not to sure where to go from here.

Thanks.

VDP - backup status

Is there a way to see what the status of each running job in VDP is? I know you can see percent complete of the overall job but is there a way to see which machine is being backed up, which have already been backed up and which proxy it is currently using?

I have 6 jobs that back up about 100 virtual machines and the jobs just seem to sit at the same percentage for a long time. They also seem to take an incredibly long time to run.

Restarting VDP hangs at starting VDP appliance systems.

estimnated time to complete: 10 minutes. But it has been much longer than 10 minutes. Powered off and powered on. Didn't help

VDP Restart and hangs at /usr/local/vdr/configure/bin/checkforddrpreset.pl", exit status=2

Failed to get disks while trying to restore single files on Linux

Hi,

I'm trying to restore single files from VDP backup of linux machines (vSphere Data Protection Linux File Level Restore - VMware vSphere Blog).

Everything is at the most recent release. When I try to mount the backup in the flash client (https://VDP_APPLIANCE:8543/flr) I get this error:

Failed to get disks: Failed to determine the partition type. Verify that all the disks on the VM have valid/supported partitions

I tried with nodes with various disk structures, but the error is always the same:

VDP manual says that at least ext4 (first try) should be supported. By the way, is it possible that XFS (the default RedHat filesystem) is not supported at all?

Thank you very much!

VDP slow, perhaps halted completely?

My old VDP installation stopped working, thought I'd start all over with 6.1.1. But it's not working at all.

All hosts have access to a NFS share through a vmkernel. VDP machine runs on NFS share and has got an IP on the same NFS network.

Jobs have halted because of failed snapshots, really messy to clean up snapshots, removing all snapshots over and over until it's finally removed.

Started a new job, halts at "Host is in a state that cannot perform snapshots". Started the same job today and a mccli activity show results in this:

Vsphere Data Protection 5.5 - can't recover disk

$

Hello to all,

Congrats on the community for these valuable resources. First time in the forum, so bear with me.

Setup is the following:

Vsphere Web Client 5.5 with Data Protection 5.5 (two appliances).

I am trying to restore 1 HDDs from a specific VM (4 HDDs in total) without success.

Info gathered:

1. I can't see the job on the recent tasks. I have to go to more tasks. Additionally, I can't cancel the job from tasks. The only way to cancel is using mccli activity cancel --id=(job id). Task is visible in Vsphere client. Before canceling I waited for over 5 hours.

2. The disk is 30GB in size but the restore always stays "In progress" without any indication. Only way to check: mccli activity show --active

3. Disk name on the original VM is disk003.vmdk. I check the log files from cmd in /usr/local/…and at some point I can see an error:

"...disk003.vmdk is not recorded in the backup and can't be restored". I can't see any other obvious error.

Conclusion is that job stays always in progress, can't be canceled using the web client and the disk is never restored.

I also tried to restore in a different VM with the same results.

Any clue on this "vmdk is not recorded in the backup and can't restored" ?

Thank you in advance.

VDP failed backups and incorrect backup job information

I am guessing these are just some of the "quirks" of VDP 5.5.6.56 and being sorta free I am not expecting everything to run smoothly...but there are a couple of things I would like to see if they can be resolved. Below is a quick list of the issues encountered out of the gates...

1. Backup jobs scheduled times are not correctly reflected in the "next run time". Seems to get the date right but not the time. Edit again and refresh makes no difference. Jobs seem to start at the correct time but the GUI is displaying it incorrectly. VMware Tools is set to sync with the host for the VDP VMs, under configuration the correct date/time and timezone are shown and also checking the output from date command on the VDP box appears to be correctly set.

2. The backups of vCenter Servers running on Windows Server 2012 fail. However it says the last successful backup was OK in the reports in the bottom window frame after completing the backup job. I can restore the VM successfully, boots up no issues. Is this just a misrepresentation of the success/failure of the backup? Are there detailed logs on the VDP appliance?

The vSphere Data Protection alert is triggered. vdp01: VDP: [014] Backup Recovery services are not running

Every day, during the backup window receives about 10 alerts like this.

Backups take longer than 12 hours to finalize

Does anyone have any idea how to solve this?

Is 39.5% for MAIL2 means it has 39.5% left to complete and 487.5GB has been backed up so far?

Problem with VDP: "[008] File level restore service not running" - triggered

Hello,

Every now and then he gets an email notification saying "The vSphere Data Protection alert is triggered. VDP6: VDP: [008] File level restore services are not running"

I can not find anything in the logs. He just writes that the mechanism of sending the above message has been triggered but in general all of the services work.

The problem is so much weird that messages come at random.

Once it is so that you get a daily message and once there is peace for a week.

backup SQL with VDP

Hi all,

I have problems with SQL backup using VDP.

I install the backup agent on the SQL Database servers, one of which appears in VDP. Left does not appear? So I can only backup a database server.

Updated and tested patches, firewalls.

How to solve that problem?

Thank you very much.

Restore Destination is blank - VDP FLR

I am having an issue trying to do a file restore using VDP 6.1. This is a fresh install and haven't been able to successfully restore a file. I log into the file level restore web client from a VM that is being backed up. I can log in and mount the backups but after I choose a file/folder to restore the window with the Restore Destination is blank and can't choose anywhere to restore.

I have tried multiple things based on my research. I have tried two different VMs (both being backed up), Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012R2. I have also tried a variety of usernames using basic and advanced login. I have used the same vcenter username in the advanced login, and for the local credential I have used a variety of domain admins, domain users, local admin of host, and various logins from vsphere. I have tried a variety of browsers also, Google Chrome (most recent version), Mozilla Firefox (most recent version), and IE 11 with the url in the trusted sites.

I am not sure if this is a permission issue with the local credential or a flash compatibility issue. Any help will be greatly appreciated, been banging my head on this for multiple days.

VDP 6.1 Limitation

We have about total of 50 to 80 VM of RHEL 7 that needs to have scheduled image backup with VDP 6.1

I read that VDP 6.1 has its limitation of scheduling at most 8 concurrent back task at a time.

Is it 1 x backup job with at most 8 x VM in it or 8 x backup job concurrently running???

Also, I read that VDP 6.1 does not scale well and backup job requires regular checking to make sure they won't be stuck at 9x% without completion.

Can anyone comment on how many instance of VDP 6.1 that needs to backup a total of 50 to 80 VM???
