GSAN status returns to degraded

Hi, Everyone.

Hope you could help me with this issue. Here are the scenario that I have

Scenario: This is newly built vdp server, it doesn't have so much in it. Right now when I go to vsphere data protection->configuration, the status is stuck on Admin. I have tried performing dpnctl stop gsan & start gsan. It automatically switch back to degraded after few seconds. I have manually perform integrity check but the same issue arise.  I have posted below the disk usage on our VDP for reference.

Filesystem      Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on

/dev/sda2        32G  6.0G   24G  20% /

udev            1.9G  148K  1.9G   1% /dev

tmpfs           1.9G     0  1.9G   0% /dev/shm

/dev/sda1       128M   37M   85M  31% /boot

/dev/sda7       1.5G  184M  1.2G  14% /var

/dev/sda9       138G  4.9G  126G   4% /space

If more information is needed, please let me know and I'll provide those information.

VDR Looping

I have a vdr backup that I need to recover a VM from.  My problem is that each maintenance cycle takes 3 days, and some of the index is corrupt.  So, In order to correct the index, I need to prevent maintenance from happening, so I can see the corrupt items and delete them.  But I can't do that because the indexing starts again immediately upon completing so there is never a window where I can see the items that need to be deleted.  Clicking stop does stop it (once), but it will immediately restart.

So, is there a way to prevent automatic indexing from happening?

Or can I set a maintenance schedule in a file on the command line?  It doesn't appear that I can change it while the task is running.

Any other suggestions on how I can get at this data?

Thanks in advance,

Kev.

Hello

My VDP datastore as been extends to 3TB instead of 2.2TB, but actually the VDP Appliance doesn't see any changes.

Is there a command to force the VDP appliance to rescan the storage ? , the VDP is running on vmware5.5

Slow vStorage API, Service Console Backup Performance in ESX4

$

I am currently testing backup solutions for VMware vSphere 4 and have found that the current vStorage API and Service Console performance is slow compared to the capabilities of my iSCSI SAN:

(vStorage API and Service Console Backup performance = 2MB - 10MB/s transfer speeds)

(iSCSI performance = 100MB - 130MB/s transfer speeds)

Veeam v4 with VCB performs at 130MB/s but Veeam v4 using vStorage API performs at 2MB-10MB/s.

Vizioncore vRanger4 DPP performs at 2MB-10MB/s using the Service Console for communication. (vRanger4 does not currently support VCB. Support is expected in v4.3 at end of year)

I have even performed standard Symantec Backup Exec, Remote Agent, backups, which perform at Gigabit speeds (as usual) over the data network.

There is apparently an issue with bandwidth "throttling" on the vSphere Service Console and vStorage API, as illustrated in this VMware article: Degraded service console backup performance after upgrading to ESX 4.0

Has anyone else experienced this performance issue, and has anyone been able to resolve the poor vStorage or Service Console performance within the aforementioned Backup products?

Best Regards,

Matthew

Problem mounting virtual hd on iSCSI target

Hi all,

I'm trying to use an virtual hd on an iSCSI target as backup disk. However, I'm not able to mount this volume with the VDR plugin.

I've created an iSCSI-target with 1,9TB an than created a virtual disk with max size (~1,89 TB). I then added the disk to the VDR-VM and formatted it via the VDR plugin (which took about 3 hours...). If I now try to add this new disk as a VDR target, the plugin tells me that the disk is not mounted. Trying to mount the disk does nothing! No visual feedback, no error message, nothing! It just stays unmounted.

I've used this configuration with VDR 1.0.2 before, and it worked (well, there where a lot of other problems with VDR... but I think you all know this fact).

Is anyone facing the same problem?

Thanks in advance!

hey everyone,

I have a quick question. I'm looking for a way to ship my VDR backups offsite. the only think i can seem to think will work is to xcopy them to a RDX usb drive after the backup window. has anyone tried this? or have any ideas?

Also, in the backup job location all i see is mainly .dat and slab files. i do not see any vmdk files. is this normal?

VDR & Linux- After a restore of a linux machine I seem to always have to reapply network settings

I tested a Red Hat Linux machine by doing a full restore of an existing machine and shutting down the current system. I left Restore Configuration and Reconnect NIC checked ON, and left the system powered off. Once it was done restoring I shut down the existing system, and powered on the new system. For some reason though when the system came up it does not seem to bind with its correct IP addresses. Once I logged into the system and ran "Setup" and re-assigned the correct IP the system ran perfectly. I know VMWare tools are not installed on that system so that may be an issue, but I really thought VDR was restoring an exact clone of the systme as it was 3 days ago when I took the backup.

I did notice the same behavior when I FIRST imported the system onto the new vSphere server, almost all of my Unix/Linux systems needed to be logged into and re-ip'ed.

Anyone have similar issues?

VCB - Sometimes pre-command is not run

$

I'm using VCB (under vSphere4) with Backup Exec 12.5 to do image level backups of my VMs. Usually it works just fine (for weeks on end), but sometimes it just stops running the pre command. If I manually start the job in BEWS, it comes back with "Failed" within 5 seconds. If I look in the %TEMP% folder, I see there is a log for the post command only. No pre command log. Naturally, the only content in this log is:

PORT is not set, defaulting to 443

Job "FullVMs" does not exist.

Which is pretty much what i would expect if the pre command doesn't work. Now, this always ends up working itself out (or I twiddle with it enough in some way I don't ever write down...), but it is frustrating. Anyone have any idea what might be going on here? I've checked my Backups folder on the VCB proxy server; there's nothing in that. None of my VMs have existing snapshots, so it's not that.

CreateSnapshot failed

Hi there.

I am trying to backup my VM systems using the VEEAM backup software.

We have licensed VMware vSphere 4 Essentials.

The guest OS I try to backup is a MS Windows 2003 Server R2 Standard x64 (with an installed MS SQL Express Edition database). The VMware tools are installed in the newest version (v8.1.3 build-203739). VSS was activated in the VMware tools installation process.

If I now try to start a backup job in VEEAM, I get two errors:

First error:

VssGAConn: Guest operation system is not supported, type EVeeamOsXP, platform EVeeamAmd64, version 5.2

Second error (I think this is the "major error"):

CreateSnapshot failed, vmRef "vm-40", timeout "1800000", snName "VEEAM BACKUP TEMPORARY SNAPSHOT", snDescription "Please do not delete this snapshot. It is being used by Veeam Backup.", memory "False", quiesce "True"

Can not create a quiesced snapshot Because the snapshot create operation exceeded the time limit for holding off I / O in the frozen virtual machine.

The veeam-support says this:

"It appears the snapshot operation cannot be performed manually, this would indicate an issue with VMware tools quiescence on that server. You will need to contact VMware support in regards to this operation failing."

I´m going crazy, because I dont know what I can do to solve the problem.

Perhaps anybody can help me here... ?!

Thank you in advance.

VDR 1.1 How to Remove Damaged Restore Points

$

I need to remove some damaged restore points, but what do i need to do after i mark them for delete,  i.e. how do i delete them or run a manual reclaim job?

also.

what is the ramification to restore points that exist after the damaged restore point, since backups are incrementals, how can i restore from anything post the dmg'd restore point since it would be missing some information?

another task is already in progress

We have using CA Arcserve and VCB to perform the backup of VM's

Recently i've noticed that some VM's are no longer reporting performance data in the "Performance" Tab of VCenter.

Furthering digging, show the account used to perform the backup snapshots is causing an an error "Another task is already in progress"

I suspect one of back jobs has been cancelled and the snapshot 'clean up'process that arcserve uses has left the VM in some state....other than normal.

What steps can I take to fix this error...i've tried rebooting the VM but this don't fix the issue.

ghettoVCB issue

Hi,

I setup ghettoVCB script in order to backup 3 VM.

I put it in a crontab but I have an issue.

In my backup folder I have 3 different folder, one for each VM.

For each Folder I have th following files :

-rw-rr    1 root     root               1263 Mar 17 01:51 vm1-2010-03-16--2.gz

-rw-rr    1 root     root               1263 Mar 17 00:41 vm1-2010-03-16--3.gz

-rw-rr    1 root     root               1261 Mar 18 01:22 vm1-2010-03-17--1.gz

drwxr-xr-x    1 root     root                980 Mar 19 23:39 vm1-2010-03-19

The problem is the last folder. It seems that a backup didn't finished the process.

When I read the logs concerned by this folder I get :

VMware Data Recovery - rdm and using it for UAT.

$

I tested VDR and came accross the following

1) the vm can not have RDM. This is due to the snapshot created of the vm does not work with snapshot

2) is there any command line interface to recover a machine ?

3) I would like to use the backed up copy of the vm for uat testing. Example, i keep my backups for 3 weeks.

Anyway to take one of those backups and turn them into a live machine without the lengthy process of a restore ?

Hello guys,

I am testing Veeam Backup but I get poor restore performance. The first backup was ok (36 GB VM ~ 10 min) but the restore is so far too slow. The same VM said time remaining 14 hrs. I don't know if I setup something wrong but this is not what I want. We have 3 Host and the VMs are in an iSCSI SAN. Any input will be appreciate.

Hi,

I'm having issues using the vcbmounter command to backup a windows server 2008 R2 Standard VM. I can succesfully backup all our 2003 servers using this command.

Has anyone experienced this? is there something I need to on the OS to allow the VCB Proxy server to take the backups?

vcbMounter -h -u -p -m san -a ipaddr:[IP address of VM] -r -t fullvm

Thanks

BackupExec 2010 Thin VMDK but Thick Backup

$

Hi,

I'm trying BackupExec 2010 R2 AVVI to backup some virtual machines on a NetApp NFS datastore. All machines have thin provisioned disks. I'm using NDBSSL transport mode.

Every time I do a backup of a thin provisioned disk, BackupExec will backup all the provisioned space and not only the used storage, resulting in overly long backup jobs.

Is anyone having the same effect? Is this VADP problem, or BackupExec problem? Any workaround?

Thanks.
