snapshots, VMware Tools, VSS and application consistency

$

I'm trying to understand if a snapshots of a windows 2008 R2 VM that's running inside an ESXi 5.1 with  just a scsi disk is application consistent or not.

Reading here it seems yes, it's app consistent but there's a couple of things that I do not understand.

What does it mean: Restore must be done using the backup application’s guest agent. https://communities.vmware.com/The vSphere APIs for Data Protection provide no host agent support for this.

If I restore the entire VM, is this consistent or not?

VDP 5.8 - An Unexpected Error with error code 10020

First attempt/test at backing up an Exchange server and in VDP reports it says its Success but in Task Failures it says 'VDP: An unexpected error occured with the following error code: 10020'.  I know that VDP doesnt supports guest-level backups of Microsoft Exchange/SQL Servers but that doesnt stop it from backing up the VM itself?  That is i wont be able to restore just Exchnage or SQL but I can restore the entire VM?  That being the case, is the error because of this lack of guest-level backup support?

VDP 6.0 - File Level Restore

Hey Guys,

I'm trying out the new VDP 6.0 to see if it can replace our existing backup solution and so far so good except for File Level Restores.

I manage to get the VM's backed up and I know that in order to do a "File Level Restore" or FLR, I have to connect to https://<IP_of_your_VDP_appliance>:8543/flr from the VM itself.  I would like to know if I can do a restore from another machine like my own workstation?  This would make it a little easier for me or the helpdesk guys to perform restores but I can't figure out how to do this.

Anyone?

Recover deleted files from datastore (iscsi from FreeNAS)

$

Hello,

I've got a problem. I'd connected iscsi target from FreeNAS as datastore to vmware host (ESXi 5.0.0) and used 100GB (30% of all capaticy) for D drive (data) in windows server virtual machine. Accidently I've deleted this datastore and didn't notice info about removing files that are associated to virtual machines. After all I reconnect this datastore, but it's empty. The capaticy is 300GB and the whole datastore is empty (in datastore browser). I'm wondering now is is possible to recover this file, because when I logged to my FreeNAS host and run 'df -h' I got info that the extent which is associated with my target has still 100GB used (which are all of my lost files). Does it mean that these files are stil located in this extent? Maybe there is a way to get my files recovered?

Thanks for help!

VDP 6.1 Can I choose the correct timezone please?!

Hello there.

Im at the VDP configuration stage now (...:8543/vdp-configure) and I cannot find the correct timezone (I need UTC+7). I usually use Asia/Krasnoyarsk tz, there are a lot of UTC+7 zones here Valid timeZone Values and in the SLES itself BUT no such zones at the VDP configure web interface. Can anyone tell me why? May be I can finish configuration with wrong timezone and change it later by recreating /etc/localtime link or in the vdp vm console? Or should I choose correct timezone during the initial configuration?

VDP 6.1 unable to ssh using root password

Hello,

I am trying to upgrade my VDP 6.1 appliance to 6.1.1. The iso is not being detected when mounted so I was going to run the hotfix. However, I cannot upload the hotfix files to my appliance via ssh. I am able to log in to the vdp-configure web portal and the vmware console using the root account. When I try to log in using putty or winscp it is saying access denied.

Also, all the potential solutions I'm finding via google appear to be broken. I get this error when trying to access the vmware kb articles:  1$deletedMessageForViewDocumentPage

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

VDP Agent SQL Database Backup Failure - Operating system error 112(There is not enough space on the disk.).

$

Community,

I'm posting this weird error in case it helps someone else. It feels like a silly oversight on my part after finding/fixing it.

I was running into a reoccurring error when trying to do a database level backup on my SQL server.  I was attempting to do a database level backup using the VDP SQL agent on a SQL 2012 server.

The database backup failed with the following information in the VDP plugin log:

"Error: Miscellaneous error."

(Not very useful, so I began pulling logs from the appliance and reviewing them.  Not real helpful there either.

(The job initially failed with permissions errors until I changed the backup agent windows service to run as an account that had appropriate SQL permissions, this seemed like a 'no-brainer'.)

Logs

I checked the logs on the SQL server, it and the Windows Event Log and found this mirrored in both:

SQL Shows (readerrorlog):

Error: 18210, Severity: 16, State: 1.

BackupIoRequest::ReportIoError: write failure on backup device '%server name removed%_%instance name removed%_SUSDB_SQL-Production-Daily-1465216797749-3006-SQL'. Operating system error 112(There is not enough space on the disk.).

Error: 3041, Severity: 16, State: 1.

BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE SUSDB. Check the backup application log for detailed messages.

Error: 18210, Severity: 16, State: 1.

BackupVirtualDeviceFile::RequestDurableMedia: Flush failure on backup device '%server name removed%_%instance name removed%_SUSDB_SQL-Production-Daily-1465216797749-3006-SQL'. Operating system error 995(The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.).

Thoughts:

1. Free space? Maybe it needs to copy DB files?

-The database was 1.7GB.  Both the OS drive (C:) and the data drive (D:) had plenty of free space.  I can't see how there wouldn't be enough room on the VM for a copy of the database if that's what's taking place first.

-The VDP appliance is only at 30% utilization of his storage space.

2. Permissions?

-I was running the backup agent windows service as a service account who is presently a 'sysadmin' to remove permissions issues.  That same account had been doing a powershell SQL backup for a long time, that runs successfully.

Simple Solution

The backup agent service simply wanted to write logs to the 'C:\Program Files\avp\var\' and 'C:\Program Files\avp\var\client logs\' folders and didn't have permissions because the service account wasn't listed on the NTFS permissions.  Once I added the service account and give him write permissions, the jobs worked as expected.

Hi,

I tried to upgrade from 6.1.2.19 to 6.1.3, in order to upgrade vmware to 6.5

It failed, because after upgrade I'm still in 6.1.2 and MCS service is down.

Itried to retart or force retore it, without success.

Here is what I found in log :

Hello,

I'm using Veeam Backup and Replication 9.5 on Windows Server 2012 R2. Backup of VMs in ESXi fails due to license problems ("Processing Win7-VM Error: Current license or ESXi version prohibits execution of the requested operation.").

Any hint how to solve the problem is very welcome... :-)

Hello all,

We are trying to have VDP appliance take backup's of the VM's in vcenter.

Now there is NAS(running Windows Server storage) on which we have created a NFS share and mounted it to one of the hosts in vcenter. The VDP appliance is deployed on the same datastore and we intend to use the same datastore as backup destination for the vm backups.

We are now seeing a behaviour such that when backup jobs are started the vdp appliance reboots itself and we lose connectivity as well. looking at the tasks in vcenter we see that the 'reconfigure virtual machine  (target:vdp appliance)' fails with the error 'query send failed'.

Could this be an issue with NFS datastore being mounted in host with NFS protocol or something else? The appliance rebooting is just strange.

Could not read the OVF package certificate

I have successfully signed the OVF package with ovftool 4.2. The certificate was signed by a Root CA.

Now the problem is that vSphere Web Client runs into the following error during Deploy OVF Template.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
