Can't take a snapshot with memory flag 0

Hello,

I have a problem with some guest on an esxi 5 host.

When I try to backup these VMs via the vadp (tsm for ve) I get the following error on the esx:

The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 5 The error message was: 'VssSyncStart' operation failed: IDispatch error #8454 (0x80042306)

The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 3 The error message was: Quiesce operation aborted
The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 3 The error message was: Error when notifying the sync provider.

I searched for a problem on the guests but could not find a solution.

So I tried to take a manual Snapshot via the vShpere client.

I noticed, that I was able to take a snapshot of these VMs with the memory flag = 1 and the quiesce flag = 1.

The problem only occurs when I try to take a snapshot with memory flag = 0 (quiesce works with both, 1 and 0).

Can anyone help me with that problem?

Working on a DR plan - Need help

First time posting here. A consulting firm setup the VMware, servers, SAN for me 2 years ago, I've been administering everything since - since i work for a 50 person small-med sized business, i wear multiple hats, one of them is Sys Admin for our 6 servers, helpdesk/desktop sup for 2 remote offices, (exchange, voip, citrix, sql environment). I have a Unitrends backup DPU which as served me well. I take archive drives off-site each night that would get me back online in the event of a fire or other natural/man-made distaster. I've since found a better outsourced IT group that does not sell/support Unitrends (my backup solution), so if a disaster occurs, i would not only have to overnight server blades, cisco switches, but also a 10k+ unitrends box which i may not want (with new tech out there). So my purpose for this project is to shorten my recovery time from a disaster.

My plan: Have VMware dump VMDK, OVA (or some flat file i can spin up on an esxi server off-site) to a folder that is replicated using r-sync (if linux) or syncrify if windows. I can't replicate it directly from my SAN, so VMware support suggested an NFS drive, but said to look into OVA exports as well. I understand you can't do file-level restore with an OVA, but I dont need that.

I've spoken with VMware support and the tech gave me two suggestions, although said developing automated scripts was considered professional services which i'm not oposed to, but I do want to learn more about this, so i'm going to do as much as I can on my own.

Here's one of powerCLI script info the vmware support rep provided.

https://www.vmware.com/support/developer/PowerCLI/PowerCLI41/html/Copy-HardDisk.html

TL:DR - Whats the quickest/easiest way to export/backup VMware servers for DR

Veeam Bottleneck=Source

I'm using Veeam Backup & Recovery version 6.5 with VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1. The VM storage is local to the ESXi server in a RAID5 SAS array. Veeam is running on a separate physical machine and backing up over a 2 Gbps aggregated link, onto an external USB 2.0 hard drive.

Veeam seems to top out at about 22MB/s when performing a backup operation, and indicates that the bottleneck is the source. This seems too slow given the setup, and I'm wondering if I'm missing something. Can anyone shed any light on my situation?

VDP VCenter Registration test failure

Hi,

We have deployed a 0.5 TB VDP appliance but when going through the initial setup we get the following error:

Specified user either is not a dedicated VDP user or does not have sufficient vCenter privileges to administer VDP.  Please update your user role and try again.
NOTE: User must not inherit roles from a group.
We have create a new domain user and given the user the administrator role on the Vcenter server and used these credentials for the registration but the test still fails.
Anybody any idea?
Thanks in advance

Avamar Backup with VMware

Hi,

We had # of ESXi host and Avamar backup application integrated. We are running very fine.

But there is one issue we are facing it with Avamar. There are delta files which are leftover in the datastore. After releasing it from Avamar Proxy and deleting the delta file. We are able to run the backup successfully.

So actually my query is

1) Why delta files are left after successful completion of backup through Avamar ?

2) Where the issue is with VMware or with Avamar ?

3) How to fix the issue ?

FLR restore is showing error most of the times

Hi,

While we try to use FLR for restoring the backup from VDP we are getting the following error message

Failed to browse backup '<folder name>'. Unable to browse as proxies are unavailable

This is happening while we  are browsing the mounted disk for restoring a folder or some files.

We are using VDP version 5.5.1.356. The ESX and other items are version 5.5.1

Please see the attached screenshot also.

Is there anybody who know why this is happening?. Please help as I tried Google and no help from there

Symantec GRT does not work with VSphere

$

Hi All,

It’s been one of those weeks.... so forgive me if seem a little tired and cross.

We upgraded to vSphere a little over 2 weeks ago, and the upgrade went very well, except in one area. Backups.

Symantec GRT in Backup Exec in 2010 does not work with vSphere. When I say doesn't work, it backs up, but it will not restore individual files.

This is the support document that describes the problem.[http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/351420.htm|http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/351420.htm]

If you read the support document carefully you will see that;

A restore of the full vm is possible. (Lucky otherwise we'd really be nuked)

It will work if you backup directly from an ESX host

Symantec are aware of the issue but have no concrete plans to fix it. (Ok)

We should all talk to a Symantec salesperson if we want to get it fixed. (Awesome)

But

They offer 2 work arounds

1) Don’t use it... not technically a work around.

2) Back up directly to each of your ESX hosts. Now I haven’t tested what issues that may create for backup and restore jobs, if for example I don’t want to back up or restore an entire host, but I'm guessing if you motion anything and don’t put it back where it's "supposed" to be you're going to have issues.

I have many things I want to say now, a tirade about releasing incomplete products, another tirade about promoting heavily features that don't work, a smaller tirade about the IT industry and its current risk of becoming the used car salesmen of the 21st century... but I'll keep that for another forum and another day.

I will however say this, in general the product does what I'd hoped it would do, backups straight to tape without wasting terabytes of valuable storage for staging, a single process to back up everything, being able to back up an Exchange server’s virtual machine alone and restore individual mail items, fantastic. Except that it doesnt work with vSphere.

The fact that Symantec even need to question whether this is a significant business issue means that they are completely out of touch with the requirements of VMware vSphere users, or dodging the fact that they have released an incomplete product, this issue could not have been missed in testing!!! Only in our industry can you release a product that you say does something, and then nothing happens to you when it doesn't, it makes me very sad, angry, frustrated, annoyed etc

Now I know you test everything, but in case you forgot, or haven't yet tried to restore an individual file, I write this hopefully to save you from thinking your backups are fine, they are not.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to do research on re-skilling for another industry

Acronis vmprotect

Hey all,

just want to warn everyone that is considering to use Acronis vmprotect in their environment. Initially we used veeam and everything was fine. After we growth we must extend our licenses and we made terrible mistake ... where we changed to Acronis vmprotect - mainly because of price. This product is not working at all (backups are failing quite often for several unknow (even to Acronis "support") reasons). Support is 1 big tragedy .... they are working for more than 1 month and doing nothing than just talking and suggestng craps ... however no solution. Of course the problem is everywhere else just not the Acronis .... vmware, backup storage .... etc. So really .. if you want to stay away from troubles with your backups go for veeam, DP, windows backup or whatever else backup solution just not the Acronis vmprotect. Try to learn from others mistakes ...   Now we have not working backups and they are refusing to return the money.

VDR checksum errors

Hello,

From time to time I see messages in the VDR message log like this:

Oct  1 11:49:10 vmdr-a datarecovery: Chunkdedupe WARNING: Slab file 354: Header 1 at header offset 34604544 is invalid (checksum error - possibly result of purging).
Oct  1 11:49:13 vmdr-a datarecovery: Chunkdedupe WARNING: Slab file 275: Header 1 at header offset 34604544 is invalid (checksum error - possibly result of purging).
Oct  1 11:49:15 vmdr-a datarecovery: Chunkdedupe WARNING: Slab file 251: Header 1 at header offset 34604544 is invalid (checksum error - possibly result of purging).

Is this anything to worry about, or just part of VDR's day to day operations?

Thanks

Nick

VDP 5.5.5 - Could not connect to the requested VDP Appliance - The SSO Server could not be found. Please make sure the SSO configuration on the VDP Appliance is correct.

Hi,

I have installed VDP 5.5.5 on 2 different subnet in a single VCenter. First VDP is in the same subnet (192.168.50.x) than the VCenter 5.5. No issues at all. It works like a charm. My other VDP 5.5.5 appliance is under another subnet (192.168.51.x) and both subnet have no issues to see each other. However, we I go to the Web Client and I try to start it I got this error message ...

Could not connect to the requested VDP Appliance.

The SSO Server could not be found. Please make sure the SSO configuration on the VDP Appliance is correct.

Would you like to be directed to the VDP Configuration utility to troubleshoot the issue?

How can I troubleshoot why it can't connect to SSO?

PS : The time is in sync. VCenter and VDP have the same time.

Should I quiesce for backup snapshots?

$

I have some Windows 2008 R2 guests that are mostly used for running statistical data jobs and utilities such as printing, SFTP and application sharing. There are 2 that run SQL, but no Exchange, Sharepoint, etc. Also some Linux web servers mostly running Apache, but one MySQL server. I'm backing up the VMs strictly for disaster recovery (data backups are separate) using VM Explorer. My understanding is that the SQL server snapshots need to be quiesced to preserve database consistency. If I don't care what is in memory or capturing the state of a SAS/Stata job, the other servers don't need to be quiesced, correct? Is there another advantage to quiescing that I should be aware of?

Thanks.

VDR "trouble reading files, error -3956 (operation failed)" issue

UPDATE : Mistake corrected with red color

Hello,

I use VDR 2.0.0 with ESXi 5 HA cluster created with 3 hosts and FC SAN acting as datastore.

I've tried to backup VM with two vmdks - first 102GB and second 1,6TB. VDR does machine snapshot but strangely two delta files for each disk appear (00001-delta, 00002-delta) rather the only one (?). After that, it starts copying data from second disk then stops at 102GB and hungs up for a two/three minutes. Then for second disk new delta file appears (00003-delta) for a moment and right after VDR remove snapshot. ESX host complains that VM disks need consolidation but it gives an error that <unspecified file> is locked and can't finish it.

Running lsof on the machine hosting that particular VM says that deltas are being used by vpxa-worker process, so finally after killing it, consolidation is possible.

Backing up the VM is all the same wherever it's running - on the same ESXi host as VDR or the other. Another machines, e.g. GNU/Linux with 1,6TB vmdk backs up successfully.

Could somebody have any idea what's going on ?

Any idea highly appreciated.

Best regards

In the VDR logs message "Trouble reading files, error -3956 (operation failed)" appears and in vcbAPI-xx.log it claims that :

Linux VM failing to snapshot

This is a bit of a strange issue and I haven't been able to find any evidence of similar reports.  Maybe someone smarter than myself can point me in the right direction.

I have been having trouble making quiesced snapshots with one of our linux virtual machines.  Unquiesced snaps seem to work fine(but are not ideal).  I have installed the latest vmware-tools and enabled the vmsync driver at install.  But whenever I attempt a quiesced snapshot it fails almost immediately.  I enabled debugging for vmware-tools, and below is a excerpt from that logfile.

Monitoring vSphere Data Protection Status using cli/script

$

Hi,

I found that the backup scheduler service stopped running in the vSphere Data Protection Status in VDP Config Utility.

I would like to monitor service status using a script.

I noticed that PowerCLI + avamar.psm1 perhaps could be used for this but I can´t find any documents or reference for this?

Can´t event find the avamar.psm1 file?

A plus would be to also be able to get failed backups for the last day using a script. That way I could also send a warning message when this occurrs.

This way I could integrate this with our central monitoring system.

Thanks for any suggestions...

VDP: Host is in a state that cannot perform snapshots

We have an VDP Appliance that is backing up one Guest VM fine but the second Guest VM it continues to error out after 10-30 seconds stating "VDP: Host is in a state that cannot perform snapshots."

I can manually create a snapshot within vCenter. I have rebooted the machine countless times trying all sorts of things based on articles I've found on the internet. I have reinstalled the VM Tools three times. There are no errors in either the system or application log in windows. There are no vssadmin list errors.

I have gone down many of the articles listing similar issues:
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&externalId=1007696
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1009073

The server is currently running Windows 2008 R2 with local disks for Storage. No SAN connections.

Full Error in vCenter:

10/21/2013 16:26:19 PM: Backup job named "Server 2 WFL Server" completed.

Hi.

Due to a backup issue, (hot-add jobs fail over to network mode), Veeam support suggest me to try to add a snapshot disk manually.

I did the next steps:

- Take one snapshot.

- Edit settings of another VM.

- Add existing disk (Independent/Non persistent). (Selecting the vmdk generated by the snapshot)

Always the same error:

Anyone have any idea about how to solve it ?

Hi,

I'm using VDP to backup a Vcenter Linux Appliance amongst other VM, on a Vsphere 5.5 infrastructure.

Everything was just fine until the day the email notification indicated that de backup of my vmware appliance failed on every single backup (all the other vms are ok).

When I look further I realise that the backup is actually ok. I extracted the logs of failed clients from VDP web interface.

In the log there is only 1 warning.

Here is my log (warning in red...).

VDP Appliance configuration - registering with vCenter fails. Possible to connect with remote vCenter?

Hi,

I want to deploy a VDP Appliance and connect it to a remote vCenter, that is, not the one on which the appliance is deployed. Say I have deployed the ova template in vCenter1, but during the configuration I want to connect it to vCenter2. The reason behind this is, that the whole environment managed by vCenter2 is very small and I don't want to deploy a 1TB+ appliance there. Both vCenters run in the same DC, so there are no communication or latency issues, also - the VM that vCenter2 is running on is registered with the vCenter1.

During the configuration i get the "VDP not found in vCenter inventory" error (not using english browser version so this might be slightly different). From what I understand, during configuration the appliance wants to discover itself within the vCenter1 inventory, altohugh I have provided it with connection info for the vCenter2. An error is reported in the vami-ovf.log:

DNS lookup zones are configured, as are the firewall ports.

Is it at all possible to connect VDP to a remote vCenter?
