VDP not loading in web client

Just upgraded vCenter 5.0 to 5.1 and installed VDP along with it. The plug-in shows in the web client and I've configured VDP accordingly. All services (except for maintenance) are running on the VDP server.

Unfortunately when I click to connect to the VDP server from the vCenter web client, I get nothing...just the waiting mouse icon and overcasted page.

What gives? There is nothing in troubleshooting that is remotely helpful for any situation. I would contact support, but VMware has screwed up my support license with the last renewal that just occured so my support doesn't begin until the 16th of this month. I have a support ticket about that in, but no word back.

VDP CPU Usage

Hi All,

I recently deployed a VDP appliance to replace VDR in our 5.1 enviroment, backing up through a FC EMC CX3-40f SATA array.

As soon as I setup the appliance (which was a nightmare due to the DNS error message!), CPU usage shot up to 2-3Ghz and stayed this way throughout the day. Bear in mind this was with no backup job configured, and there was little disk IO during this period.

I logged in to the appliance using SSH, and using top, found that the Java processes are taking up most of the CPU - along with intermittant bursts from "gsan".

I then setup and kicked off a backup of our enviroment after hours, and saw that the CPU usage shot up to 10GHz - I had to stop it to stop it affecting other VMs.

I understand that this product will require heavy resources due to the dedup, but is this really normal behaviour? It's maxing out an HP G7 blade at the moment!

I have tried combinations of 1 - 4 vCPU, upping the memory to 16Gb and updating Tools.

Anyone else seeing similar behaviour, or have any advice?

Unable to login to VDP restore client

Hi

I've just recently started to use the VDP and am trying to test the file level restore functionality.

I'm unable to login to the restore client however.

On a VM I have a backup of, I open IE and type https://"IP of vdp:8543/flr/"

As credentials I have tried both basic and advanced login. On the basic login I try to log in with the domain administrator (domain\administrator, which is also a local administrator) . It then seems to try to connect to the vdp but after a couple of seconds a message appears:

"Login failed. HostSession is NULL"

If I try the advanced login instead and try to use the vCenter Credentials I get "Login failed. Invalid credential format"

I try to login with the same user (SYSTEM-DOMAIN\vdp) I created for vCenter Registration. I have tried to use both SYSTEM-DOMAIN\vdp and only vdp as a username but with the same result.

Any thoughts as to what might be wrong? I have tried this with the same result on several VMs, and also tried to restart the file restore service on the configuration page.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Esxi 5.0 Host support for FC connected Tape Drives in virtual machine running symantec backup exec 2012

Dear Experts,

We recently bought  C0H19A: HP StoreEver 1/8 G2 LTO-6 Ultrium 6250 FC TapeAutoloader. The purpose is to backup data from virtual machines, I mean selected data in virtual machines, like for exchange the email databases for accounts server the SQL server database etc. We don't have plan for complete virtual machine backup, hence using symantec backup exec software.

We have this setup:

- TWO DL 380 Gen8 servers (running Esxi 5.0 update2), The two servers don't have any SCSI ports

- ONE HP P2000 G2 MSA FC Dual Cntrl Storage

- TWO HP SN6000 12-pt Sngl Pwr FC switch

- Autoloader HP

All above are connected with FC. The Symantec backup exec 2012 is also installed on Windows 2008 R2 which is a virtual machine.

But now we are unable to see the autoloader robotic library through virtualization layer in backup exec virtual machine device manager. While reading on internet I also found some details that FC connected tape drives are not supported by Esxi hosts. We are really stuck in this situation, any solutions to this. I also read article from vmware saying configuring FC tape drives for Esxi 4.0 and later

Installing a physical windows server with Backup Exec 2012 and with HBA's and connected to above FC switches is the only way to see autoloader ? Even after reading articles on internet I am not very clear, Please guide what solution I have now to get this thing going, I really need to find solution to this.

Waiting for responses.

Kind Regards,

VDP not sending Summary Report since Sunday (time change).

I just noticed that the (4) VDP appliances I am testing all stopped sending the Email Summary Report after the Daylight Savings time change on Sunday. the last report was generated Sunday morning at 12:00am. Now all the appliances are reporting this:

VDP: Send email summary report error. The email summary report timer is set to the incorrect hour. It does not match the vdrdb value.

The time this error is generated is 11:00:00pm which is exactly one hour from when it should be running.

I think this is a Daylight Savings time issue but dont know how to address it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

VDP upgrade to v5.8 stalls at 94% every time

I am trying to upgrade my VDPa 5.5.6.56 install to v5.8, so I can take advantage of Exchange DAG backups.  I've upgraded before, so I am familiar with the process and it has always gone smoothly.  Each time, the upgrade process stalls at 94%.  I've tried mounting the upgrade ISO on both shared (NFS) and local direct-attached storage of that host (VMFS), with the same result.  I have re-downloaded and verified the checksum of the ISO image as well.  We back up to Data Domain, so there are 100+GB free on the datastore where VDP lives.

Because the process stalls, I am forced to power off and revert to current snapshot.  Then VDP 5.5.6 boots back up normally and all is well. However, I then lose access to any logs that I could inspect to see what the actual problem is.  So my question is, where do I look to troubleshoot this?  Which log do I inspect for why my VDP upgrade is stalling?

I am not opposed to a fresh install, but since we are backing up to Data Domain and replicating out, I would prefer not to have to re-seed all my VDP backups over our slow WAN, not to mention recreate all my backup/replication jobs from scratch.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Replication to Cloud / Offsite storage method?

Hello,

I am running vsphere essentials plus and have VDP 5.8 set up and running very well on site.  However, I am looking for how to replicate this to an off site storage unit.  How are people replicating vdp to offsite storage and/or to the cloud?

Thanks

Problem:

We have a problem only with one VM, and it’s don’t care goes itfirstor lastin the backup list. When Vcenter prepare snapshot which will be write via TSM, we have a few error messages.

I found only one KB, but it doesn’t work for our problem.

In IBM KB I can’t find anything helpful about ANS9265E and ANS9264E errors.

Please tell me if you need any log or system information.

VDP: [004] The VDP appliance datastore is approaching maximum capacity

Hi,

I've got this alarm "VDP: [004] The VDP appliance datastore is approaching maximum capacity" because the datastore where i have the VDP virtual disks is almost with the exact size of the virtual disks.

I've disabled the alarm, but everytime i reboot the VDP appliance the alarm recreated and enabled.

Is there any way to make VDP not recreate this alarm definition?

Installation of the package stalled

The installation stalled due to an error. Please use your snapshot to rollback the appliance.

1.) error message is not really helpful

2.) i rolled back and tried a 2nd time, no luck

Anybody a clue where to look for detailed error messages?

VM CPU ready time and ESX host CPU ready time

Hi Team,

I've been searching the net for info. on CPU ready time on ESX host, I'm already aware for VM's the recommended is 5% CPU ready time anything higher than that the VM would is performing quite poorly.

But what I want to know is ESX host ready such that I can measure at host level the CPU's are over committed resulting in insufficient CPU resource allocation for the VM's but I haven't managed to find any specifics - can anyone shed some light on this or point me in the right direction

Move VDP to a new vCenter

We are moving to the vCenter appliance. Does anyone know the process for moving VDP to the new vCenter WITHOUT losing any backup data?

VMware Data Protection (VDP) "Backup/Restore VM" cause Single Node Microsoft Cluster (MS Cluster) running under a single VM to lose the physical disks (Error 1038) - any ideas? Supported Config?

$

The environment is as follows:

A 2 node physical MS Cluster was made a single node MS Cluster and then P2V was performed to a VMware VM.   This was done because the belief that the DB2 and MQ Series based application was a MS Cluster and would need to continue as such.

So we now have a single node MS Cluster running under a single VM with VMDK disk under MS Cluster control.

Troubleshooting through the Windows Event Log:

A "Create virtual machine snapshot" was executed and completed successfully.

A VDP "snapshot" via proxy appliance was performed and "crashed".   The log shows a "VDP "Backup / Restore VM" (I am told it was just a backup, no restore) was executed and immediately followed with a MS Cluster "Error 1038" - loss of physical disk resources.

Some 12 hours later a "Remove snapshot" was performed and exactly the time stamp that was done, the "Backup / Restore VM" showed Complete!

Questions:

1) Does VDP support a single node MS Cluster with vdsk?   (I see no indication of that, but client felt it was)

2) If yes to 1), any specific settings needed for it to work?

3) Any insights or comments on what could have been the reason why the VDP backup resulted in an immediate Err 1038 as described above?

Thanks in advance!

Bottleneck = source

Dear all,

I am using ESXi 3.5 (Free version) and I am triailing Veeam Backup & Replication. The most I can get out of it is 5 - 6 Mb/s My VM is 570GB and the whole thing is taking 25 odd hours.

Is this a limitation to the free version or have I go something wrong??

VDP vs VDR

$

Hi everybody,

i couldnt help myself starting this conversation.

i was very suprised for VDR being shutdown.

i knew VDR would be updated, but was not expectng so soon, since the latest 2.01 was released not so long ago.

i found out VDP was out when updating to vsphere 5.1 and there was no VDR plugin to vcenter.

Anyway i am really dissapointed in VDP, to say the least!

First it depends on SSO and the vmware web client. i couldnt believe: i had to use the slowest gui i have ever used, (not as slow as backup exec 2012 thought!) so much more complicated.

second, you cannot choose the partitions to backup! This is unbelievable! the use i gave VDR was to backup the boot partitions of windows vms!

the other partitions usually have data, that are daily backed up to tape.

so at this time with VDP i have to backup a vm with 700GB in disks, when with vdr i only backup up C: partition with 50GB! hilarious

third, i am obliged to choose between aplliances, that cannot be expanded. In VDR you could mount a partition with any size, anytime!

now i must choose the 2TB VPD appliance because i didnt want to risk not having enough storage in the future, and didnt want to bother having to install more VDP appliances ( they come configured with 4 CPU!)

fourth, it is way harder, not to say impossible, dont know for sure, to reuse a damaged VDP disks, to recover all previous backups.

in VDR all you need was to keep the data partition intact, run a new vdr appliance, mount the data partition from the previous VDR, check integrity and ready to go! VDR lets you use a external disk to store in a safe, using it like tapes!

fifth, minor issue: when backing up, VDP inserts VM costume field "com.vmware.vdr.is-protected" as true

But you know, its not vdr its VDP, and this field should only changed after the backup, not before! and if something goes wrong in the backup, if you try to delete the field, VDP automatically inserts it again.

for these reasons, i am forced to use backup exec, without the miracle of deduplication to backup only boot partitions.

i hope vmware solves these major issues very soon, dedup is precious, and VDR was just right.

thanks

vDP - Sick of being a beta tester

I am really tired of VMWare releasing half-finished software and expecting end users to be beta testers. First it was SSO (what a disaster that was/is), and now vDP - what is going on with this appliance? It's a complete resource hog that crashes constantly. Why does it need 4 CPUs? What on earth can it be doing that needs so much? Why does it take 10 minutes to boot the appliance? Why is installation such a mess? How come when I try to start backup jobs, half the time, nothing actually happens (apart from a snapshot being taken)? How come you are forcing me to use the webclient to access it?

The whole 5.1 release reeks of being rushed and I'm thoroughly unimpressed.
