My setup:

vSphere 5.0.0, 469512

4 VM Instacnes, all being backed up using Veeam 6.1

Using Veeam 6.1 Backup and Replication

Monthly Full with incrementals.

My backup jobs are failing on ONE of the 4 instances.  A cruical one at that.

Veeam support indicated my snapshots are the cause which is not a Veeam support issue but rather VMWare's support issue.  When I go into my vSphere Client, I see no snapshots in the snapshot manager.  However, I saw this error in my events:

Warning message on Email. This virtual
machine has 255 or more redo logs in a
single branch of its snapshot tree. The
maximum supported limit has been
reached, creating new snapshots will not
be allowed. To create new snapshots,
please delete old snapshots or consolidate
the redo logs.

Then I went into the folder in the datastore and saw all the Email-000001.vmdk and Email-000001-ctk.vmdk through Email-000255.vmdk and Email-000255-ctk.vmdk files.  I then noticed the hard drive files the Hard Disk 1, 2 and 3 are using Email-000255.vmdk respectively.

How can I resolve?  I read around Google I two options:

1. consolidate but I don't have enough space nor time for as I understand it could take days.

2. Create a new VM and copy the disks over, but which ones?

3. Use vCenter Converter to convert it to another instance, although it keeps erroring out at Checking Free Space at Destination after 30 minutes.

Can't I just delete all the Email-000001.vmdk and Email-000001-ctk.vmdk files?

When we take snapshot through NetApp VSC plugin most of the VMs not backed up due to the below error. Is there any other method available? How can i fix this? Please suggest me on this.

we have vSphere 5. Our vCenter is a virtual machine too. For Backup we use Symantec Backup Exec 2012. In the log files of Backup Exec we get an error message.

Translated to english it tells:

While backup it has been mentioned that on a virtual machine is installed both the VSS Provider of Symntec and that one of VMware. You have to deinstall the VMware VSS Provider.

The virtual machine, on which one the error occurs is the vCenter Server.

Is it a problem if I uninstall the VMware VSS Provider ? Do I loose some functionally without it ?

I've got this alarm "VDP: [004] The VDP appliance datastore is approaching maximum capacity" because the datastore where i have the VDP virtual disks is almost with the exact size of the virtual disks.

I've disabled the alarm, but everytime i reboot the VDP appliance the alarm recreated and enabled.

Is there any way to make VDP not recreate this alarm definition?

With BLIB (block level incremental backups) enabled in Netbackup 7, CBT enabled (done through Netbackup and verified through script), Win 2k8 R2 x64 VM, we successfully did a full backup from the Netbackup master server and then an incremental.  We manually deleted the original VM from disk and then successfully used the Netbackup master server to do a full restore to the same datastore on the same ESX host.  However, the MAC address changes somewhere in the process so Windows thinks it has a new physical NIC and the original NIC is missing.  Due to this, we have to manually configure the IP info that Windows already thinks it has.  Is there anyway we can have the Netbackup restore job restore a VM that is identical right away without extra configuration from us?  We do not have a client installed in the VM so we are taking advantage of VADP (vStorage API for data protection) from the Netbackup master server.

Edit: We did this same process for a Win 2k3 SE 32-bit VM and the restored VM came up fine with the original IP info.  The MAC address (auto-generated) by VMware is different than the original but Win 2k3 doesnt' seem to have an issue with that.

Can someone describe the tasks taken in the backup process? (detailed)

Take a Backup of a VM that was backed up on the 30th October and today is backed up again, the backup takes over 1h 30 minutes. Why so long?

Disk Size: 42 GB

Datastore: 6x Lefthand P4300

Backup Datastore: Synology RS810 (4x WD 2TB 24x7)

Disk Speed Test: 100 MB/s read, 80 MB/s write

should also not be the problem..

the load on the syno isn't very high (look the screenshot).

Does anyone have an Idea why its so slow..?

Curious what people are doing to backup up physical ESXi servers?   We have IBM TSM, but I'm not sure it can backup an ESX Host.

Strictly looking at ESX host backups at the moment and not virtual machines.

we are running VSA Backup of CommVault SIMPANA. We are using a VSA Proxy. To the Proxy the VMFS-5 LUNs are mapped read-only so that we can use SAN as transport mode for the VMs which are located on that datastores.

We have testet many things but always still getting the error message "Failure Reason:Could not read data from the virtual disk" and the Job failed. At the beginning we started with one Subclient for all the VMs but now we switched to one Subclient per VM so that the jobs are running sequentially step by step but the error still occurs.

We are running the latest version of VMware ESXi and also the latest version of the vSphere Server.

Maybe someone of you is also using VSA backup of SIMPANA and can help us to resolve this issue.

I have a problem with the data recovery, I am not able to backup my machines I only get  following error:

error -3948 ( vcb api exception)

Hope anyone has a idea what this error mean and how I can solve this, I have looked in some threads, but i couldnßt find something similar.

I'm running Vcenter 5.1 with 4 x ESXi 5.0.0 76811 hosts. I've implemented two VDP appliances 1 x 0,5TB and 1 x 1TB .

Integrity check fails  with 0,5TB VDP backup appliance. Everything is okay with the 1TB appliance.

When I check the Reports tab it says : Intergrity check: out of date.

backup window is from 6.00 PM till 6.00 AM and blackout window 6.00 AM till 9.00 AM and Maintenace window from 9.00 AM till 6.00 PM.

I've tried to run Integrity check manually, first comes popup that says when the Integrity check has been running last time and the date is when I installed the appliance :

When I click YES then the VDP appliance hangs for a about 30 seconds and after that it says:

Also I have checked the Appliance event messages and you can see thos mesages when I have run the manual Integrity check:

Does anyone have an idea how to solve this problem?

Environment:

• VDP 5.5.6.180

Followed the usual upgrade procedure:

1. VDP Appliance snapshotted
2. Mounted ISO containing 5.8.0 upgrade
3. Started upgrade from service web console

The problem: logging in on vSphere Webclient produces an "Error #1009" as follows...

Found this KB about "wrong URLs informed on vApp properties", but VDP is not an vApp and there is no such configuration... how can this be fixed without upgrade vCenter Server to 5.5u2?

Update #1: now even rolling back the snapshot to VDP 5.5.6, the vCenter Server still shows the Error #1009... and is also showing the wrong version information on it. Any help we'll appreciate.

I am currently experiencing an issue with the backup of one VM using Vmware Data Recovery. The VM in question is a Windows 2003 DC.

Initially the error we were experiencing was along the lines of  "unable to quiesce the guest when creating a snapshot". After searching through various articles we decided to uninstall VM tools and re-install without the VSS Snapshot & Sync drivers.

We are  still not able to create any snapshots of the VM:

"failed to create snapshot for server, error -3941 (create snapshot failed).

When attempting to create a snapshot, the Data Recovery Manager task states that  "another task is already in progress", which it is not. This also happens when attempting to create a manual snapshot on the VM. (see attached)

So perhaps this has already been answered somewhere else and if so could you point me in the right direction please?  Basically the situation is the following.  I have 2 sites ( primary and DR) and have deployed VDP 6.0 at the primary location and configured backup jobs successfully to local datastores at the primary site.  Restores work great as well.  I have also configure the storage array to perform mirroring at the array level in a stretched cluster configuration.  So the question is if something were to happen to the VDP appliance at the primary site ( accidentally deleted or got corrupted) would I be able to deploy a new appliance and re-index all the previous protected VM's jobs or would all of that information be lost and I would have to completely start from scratch?  My concern is if something were to happen to the primary site and I only had the replicated LUN's at the DR site then how could I conduct a restore of the VM's the original VDP appliance had done for the previous months?  Seems like the purpose to me of VDP is to ensure you have and can retain backups of VM's for extended periods of time and should be able to restore them at another location in the event of a disaster but so far it's not clear how to do this.  Many thanks in advance for suggestions or location of methods to retain all previously backed up jobs

In our test environment I've installed VDP agent on Exchange 2013 vm without any issue. Then, because there were some issues on the exchange vm, I've decided to install another exchange with /recover switch and removed the old one. So new exchange server is working fine with the same specs (name, ip etc) with the old one but now I can't install VDP Agent.

I've already tried both ip and fqdn during the installation so this shouldn't be an issue. It seems VDP keeps the old agent info somewhere even though it is not installed on the new server...

Any help appreciated.

i'm using VDP Advanced 6.0 i successfully installed the SQL backup Agent on a SQL 2012 server and added the required permissions for the BuiltIN NT System and it's currently showing all databases from the VDP backup Console , i have another server wich is installed SQL server 2008 and SQL management Studio 2012 but the problem is that it's not showing any database from the SQL Agent , i thought it was a permission problem but after some research in the net i found an EMC forum telling that it was due to wrong dll loading and it was loading the DLL for the SQL 2012  i ran then the CMD  :

i first renamed the sql 2012 dll as suggested from the emc forum and rerun the cmd

the solution was to rename the dlls , this is the quoted solution :

The following DLL files are located at C:\Program Files\avs\bin (the default install location of the Avamar client).

When the SQL plugin detects SQL 2012, it loads avsqlsmo11.dll. It loads avsqlsmo08.dll for SQL 2008 and avsqlsmo.dll for SQL 2005.

 

When you rename avsqlsmo11.dll, the client will then fall back to avsqlsmo08.dll. The client will fall back to a previous version when it cannot encounter the DLL it wants to load from the version detection. So, if the client detects SQL 2008 even though SQL server is 2005, rename avsqlsmo08.dll and it will load avsqlsmo.dll.

i restarted the windows server , i reinstalled Dot Net 4.5.1 and restarted again but still the same issue when i run the backup wizard and click on the server it doesn't show any database , anyone have had a similar issue ? thanks for help

I am attempting to set up a Hortonworks sandbox on our VSphere 5.5 lab environment.  We have deployed many times before and have had various problems, but this is a new one to me.

After selecting the OVA file from my local disk within the File/Deploy OVF Template wizard, and selecting where to store the VM (we use SAN), it errors out after I click "Finish" with the error "Failed to Deploy OVF package: A general system error occurred: Failed to write to C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\journal\1433426209.11: Error writing file.  There is not enough space on the disk."

I don't know why it is trying to write a journal file to my local workstation, but at any rate the path referenced in the error did not exist.  I tried creating those folders but the same error was returned.

Note that this is a 5.41 GB OVA file and the local disk on my workstation has 244 GB free.

I then tried adding additional permissions (Users did not have Write) but it still threw the error.  I noticed that the file properties page for the OVA showed it as blocked since it came from a different computer so I unblocked it, but again had no luck with the deploy...same error.

I assume that the path is written during the conversion of a VM at Hortonworks to an OVA (Export?) but I have no idea how, or even if I could change it.  Or even if changing the path would help.

Has anyone else run into this issue and is there a work-around that you can provide?

I am doing some test with DP 6.0 and the SQL backup, I have been doing some backups but I could not restore any of the backups yet.

Every time is the same error no matter if I do some changes during the restore process.

I can see these lines at the events panel from the vsphere client :

Task: VDP: Restore Job

VDP Restore "VM name" started

VDP server execution error code: 10007 Job name ......

VDP: Restore completed

Could you please tell me where to check if there is another log where I can find more information about this error?

Also, I have done backups and restores for individual VMs and it works fine, until now I have done backups from SQL Application but I could not complete the restore correctly.

I am configuring Windows 2008 R2 64bit for BackupExec 2010 but when I run Diskpart Automount disable and automount scrub. After I rebooted the server 2008 still asked me do I want to initilize the presented VMFS partitions?

I have checked and automount is disabled? and I ran scrub again? I tried this on another machine and the same happened?

Is there something else I should be running?

I am trying to configure Netbackup master server  7.0 to take backup of all virtual machine. I am using EMC Fibrechannel  and vmware 4.0 for VMware

Environemnt.  Now i want to take VM backup by Netbackup.   Please answer below mention.

1.  Do i need to present all the luns to Netbackup master server also to take san free backup of Vmware .

2. How it is possible to do the same thing without presenting all the luns to Master/Backup server.

3. i have 100 VM's and How can i take the agent free full vmbackup.
