I'm in the last year of school and for my final exam, I got to do a project about Veeam and VDR. I need to figure out which one of the backup solutions that is best for a small vsphere office enviroment. I've been researching for so many days but i dont seem to get anything out of it. Im a rookie when it comes to backup, and I could really need some help.
Could anyone, on a basic level tell me about all the VDP feautures, and try to convince me why VDP is the best solution for a small office enviroment over Veeam backup free v8.
I've got a lab enviroment where i can test these two backup solutions, and compare them to eachoter. But i wont get anything out of it if i dont understand what i am testing.
Remember, this is about a SMALL enviroment, where vDPA is probably not an option, because of the cost. But, you could tell me what the advantages of getting vDPA would be.
Please, help me out right here. Im pretty stressed out..
Hi,
Had a fatal disk failure in my lab environment, and all VM's expect vDP (5.5) appliance where lost (actually ran vDP on NFS-share on DataDomain).
So, the only VM I can boot is the vDP appliance.
But, it seems to have lost it's connection to DataDomain, and I cannot find a way to manually add a spesific DDBoost share to the config. Adding DataDomain to the vDP just creates a new share.
The lost VM's are not a big deal THIS TIME, but of course down the road in a real life scenario it would be handy to know how to "remap" on worst case a "fresh" vDP appliance to an existing DDBoost share on the DataDomain array.
Anyone with more Avamar skills that know the command lines for doing this, since there's no way to do this via the GUI.
Thanks!

I want to ask that how to exclude the backup of a drive in vmware mirage server.
All,
So perhaps this has already been answered somewhere else and if so could you point me in the right direction please? Basically the situation is the following. I have 2 sites ( primary and DR) and have deployed VDP 6.0 at the primary location and configured backup jobs successfully to local datastores at the primary site. Restores work great as well. I have also configure the storage array to perform mirroring at the array level in a stretched cluster configuration. So the question is if something were to happen to the VDP appliance at the primary site ( accidentally deleted or got corrupted) would I be able to deploy a new appliance and re-index all the previous protected VM's jobs or would all of that information be lost and I would have to completely start from scratch? My concern is if something were to happen to the primary site and I only had the replicated LUN's at the DR site then how could I conduct a restore of the VM's the original VDP appliance had done for the previous months? Seems like the purpose to me of VDP is to ensure you have and can retain backups of VM's for extended periods of time and should be able to restore them at another location in the event of a disaster but so far it's not clear how to do this. Many thanks in advance for suggestions or location of methods to retain all previously backed up jobs
Hi everybody,
I'm new here so i hope i had a good time at this fórum.
I have a question about backups and may be you can help me
I had a virtual machine running on a backup (backup window yesterday 19.00am - today 07.00am) but there was a problema; the backup instead of STOPPING today at 07.00am, it continued until now that i've stopped it manually.
Any idea of what could have happened with this? Why VMware Datarecovery didn't take it into account? Is a known mistake?
Thank u very much!

Hello,
Our Data Recovery appliances started crashing. The appliance VM itself is running OK, but the datarecovery service is crashing after the service starts.
So all of the appliances are actually unusable :(.
Has somebody experienced this situation?

We use VDR 1.0.2.562 and from time to time restore points get damaged. These restore points need to be marked for deletion and during the automatic reclaim task. they are removed. It may take a while before the reclaim task runs.
Is it possible to manually start the reclaim task? and if yes, how?
Hi everyone,
I'm new to VDR Backups, so go easy on me :-).
I have a scheduled job I have setup, and twice when the job has ran, it gets to a certain server in the list (lets call it ServerA), and the jobs just hangs. Last time I stopped the job, and after 1 hour I powered off the VDR appliance. I deleted the store.lck folder and ran an integrity check.
This is the second time this has happened (which was the next scheduled backup time). I have tried to stop the job, but it is sitting there doing nothing. The slab files in the backup location have not been modified since 1:45 am (10 hours ago), and the journal.dat file at 9:15am. I can see that the VDR appliance has the vmdk of ServerA mounted, and the ServerA has a -000002.vmdk file mounted. There is no file activity on the server where the backup location resides (using filemon). Also, the log never makes mention of the backup of ServerA.
One of the other servers (lets call it ServerB) that VDR needs to backup, fails with the error -3960 (cannot quiesce virtual machine). It attempts to backup ServerB 6-8 times, and is the last task before it moves onto ServerA. I'm guessing this is a separate issue, as it successfully performs other backups inbetween attempts to backup ServerB.
Does anyone know why this might be hanging on ServerA, and how I can rectify this problem.
(Also, if someone has any suggestions around the ServerB error, these would be helpful)
Thanks.

Hi,
I'm trying BackupExec 2010 R2 AVVI to backup some virtual machines on a NetApp NFS datastore. All machines have thin provisioned disks. I'm using NDBSSL transport mode.
Every time I do a backup of a thin provisioned disk, BackupExec will backup all the provisioned space and not only the used storage, resulting in overly long backup jobs.
Is anyone having the same effect? Is this VADP problem, or BackupExec problem? Any workaround?
Thanks.
ok this is the situation (ESXi 5 /VSphere client):
VM (WS2008) didn't boot anymore.
I've managed to download via Data Storage Browser the big SERVER-flat.vmdk file plus 14 out of 15 other file sets containing snapshots.
(SERVER-000002.vmdk to SERVER-000015.vmdk + SERVER-000002-delta.vmdk to SERVER-000015-delta.vmdk).
However there was no way to save SERVER-00001.vmdk and the associated delta file and then the server failed completely (data corruption after the failure of one disk in the Raid array, etc.)
I've rebuild the server on another machine from the -flat file (renaming FILENAME inside SERVER.VMX from SERVER-000015 to SERVER) but this brings me back to the initial server configuration (one year ago).
When I try to add the snapshot files (even renaming the 000002 into 000001 or editing the vmdk file (ParentFileNameHint) it always returns an error.
Error message from esxi502: Reason: The parent virtual disk has been modified since the child was created. The content ID of the parent virtual disk
does not match the corresponding parent content ID in the child.
Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/51312345-e57af280-etc-etc/SERVER.domain.it/Server-000002.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
Question 1: Is there any way to incorporate the snapshots, jumping from SERVER-000002 to SERVER.vmdk, seeing that the first one is missing?
Question 2: is there any program that can read/recover data from single vmdk files? (tried already Systools VMware recovery but this does not work with files saved from VM to local disk as the support explained to me)
Any help would be highly appreciated as I'm desperate, not very familiar with VMware and the data is crucial for us.
Thanks a lot!
We have deployed the OVA file and started the box. THe boxes gives a IP and advises us to connect to: https://<IP address>:8543/vdp-configure
All we get is a display page:
Going to the IP without the port on the end displays:
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.
Have tried redeploying the VM to see if anything happens and have also turned off our proxy settings.
any ideas?
Hello,
Has anyone met the following problem?
vDP 6.0 running on vSphere 5.5.
After working normally for a while at some point for unknown reason I've noticed the message "There are no registered application clients available. Please go back or cancel the wizard." at stage when I need to select backup source. Either creating new job or editing existing ones.
The existing backups and replications work OK.
What does this mean?
I'll appreciate any input.
Thanks.
Can someone please explain, why a vSphere Data Protection (VDP) discs sets in independent mode?
What are risk if I deselect it?
I need to backup the VDP appliance.
Hi all
Due to some issue. I reinstalled the vCenter
My vcenter installed on windows 2008 R2
But my VDP backup have to be managed by the new one
Does anyone know how to switch the VDP to new vcenter without losing the original bakcup data and functionally managed by new vcenter?
Many Thanks.
Jimmy Chien
I tried to login to the VDP , reconfigure the password (the only change is the password)
and get the following warning.(Please see attachment)
Hi Guys,
We are currently running an Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 Fail-Over Cluster build on 2 VM's running on vSphere 5.0.
Because the cluster volume disk is connected by iSCSI we are not able to back-up this disk with our default tooling: Veeam B&R.
Currently we are protecting this volume on SAN level by Remote Snapshots. Actually i am looking for a user friendly way to protect and recover data from this cluster volume disk.
I am just curious about how and with which tooling you guys should back-up this cluster volume disk.
Cheers!
I expanded the space on the VDP 6 appliance from 2TB to 4TB by expanding the files (from 3 to 6). But it is still showing over 80% full and growing after several days. It should be around 40% now. How can I force it to rebalance the backups between the new files or at least to acknowledge that it can use the new space? It does say the capacity is 4.1TB, but it says the deduplicated size is 3.3TB which is totally bogus.
According to status.dpn, the garbage collection just ran. It took nearly 2 hours and "recovered 12.09 GB". So garbage collection didn't rebalance the files.
hfscheck ran yesterday successfully, so that didn't rebalance.
It has been thru a half dozen 12 hour maintenance windows. no luck.
All services are running, the only alarm is the VDP: [002] The VDP appliance is nearly full.
So how to I get it to rebalance?
Hello,
Can somone please tell me the best way to do backups using VEEAM in a SAN environment with 3 hosts and 2 arrays with the VMWare Standard Acceleration Kit? I'd prefer not to purchase another device to back up to and I definitely want backups to both the LAN and Cloud. I'm planning on implementing a full 10GB solution. Let me know if you need any more info!
Thanks,
T
how do i backup a vm with rdms with vdp?
new vdp 5.5 appliance 1TB connected to a vcenter 5.5 appliance
configured a dozen or so backups that are working.
have 3 vm's that get
"An unexpected error occurred with the following error code: 10058"
the three vm's are windows 2008 servers.
running job manually or scheduled get the same error
google does not come up with any matches nor does this community have mention of the error code.
any ideas?
