Opinions on Symantec V-Ray vs Veeam

$
0
0

We are looking at both of the products in the subject line for our DR solution. I can read all the marketing material till I'm blue in the face, however I wanted to here from people who are using them in the real world with why we should take one over the other.

Veeam has Surebackup and vPower, which I found quiet cool. We liked Symantec as it's a one tool fits all (physical and virtual). Veeam also has to use third party to spool backups off to tape.

Any opinions either way would be appreciated!

Cheers

VDP - Backing up Vcenter Server or Restore if vcenter dies

$

Many of my customers have very simple installs with a single SAN.

I have a test environment right now where I have 2 esxi hosts and a san. One of the hosts has a local datastore. I am using the local datastore to house VDP and my backups. The idea being 1 this is a lab and 2 if i lose the SAN i probably wont lose the local datastore.

That being said i have 2 issues.

1. First i cannot add the vcenter server to the backup job. I suppose this could possibly be by design given my next question

2. Can you restore anything without the vcenter server? The file level recovery allows you to log directly into the VDP appliance from a protected host. My main purpose of a vm level backup is to restore everything if i lose the datastore. So if i have a virtualized vcenter server (i assume most do) and i lose my primary datastore i am going to lose both the protected virtual machines and the vcenter server. I have not going to lose the VDP data since it would reside on a seperate datastore. Can you initiate a restore directly from the VDP appliance without vcenter? If not this seems like a glaring oversite that should be changed. I would prefer to be able to backup vcenter with VDP and initiate a restore of vcenter directly from the VDP appliance if i lose everything.

Also are there any plans to make vdp managed from the vcenter client, the web client is not that great compared to the standard client.

how to reduce used capacity in data protection?

$

A customer of ours uses vSphere Data Protection.

In the reports, I see that Used Capacity is growing at 1%~2% per day.

It has reached 86.31%.

We removed old backup some days ago, so it should have been able to complete the maintenance, but it is still growing.

How can we lower the used capacity?

Thank You very much and regards

Linux VM failing to snapshot

This is a bit of a strange issue and I haven't been able to find any evidence of similar reports.  Maybe someone smarter than myself can point me in the right direction.

I have been having trouble making quiesced snapshots with one of our linux virtual machines.  Unquiesced snaps seem to work fine(but are not ideal).  I have installed the latest vmware-tools and enabled the vmsync driver at install.  But whenever I attempt a quiesced snapshot it fails almost immediately.  I enabled debugging for vmware-tools, and below is a excerpt from that logfile.

Safe to delete snapshot from failed vdp backup

$

Hi

I had some backups fail last night and on 4 VMs I can see a snapshot that the VDP appliance made during the backup but was unable to remove automatically. (I assume)

Since these are some pretty critical servers I want to make sure that I can simply delete them using the snapshot manager without it impacting the running VMs in some way.

One of the reasons I want to be absolutely sure is that the view in the snapshot manager seems a bit odd. (See Attached images)

Shouldn't the snapshot be above the "You are here"? This it what it looks like on 3 of the VMs.

Snapshotmanager1.JPG

On the fourth it looks like this:

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

EBRA and EBRA Porxy Installation with vCenter 5.5 and NetWorker 8.1

$

Hi,

I have several questions below:

1) Can EBRA and EBRA Proxy OVA be installed with vCenter 5.5 without DNS?  If the /etc/hosts files in all the conerned hosts are fully configured should it work? or there are more files need to be modified in order for it to work?  What are these files?

2) I have 0.5 TB EBRA and one proxy and both EBRA and Proxy can support 8 streams.  How does EBRA and EBRA Porxy balance the streams if there are more that 8 streams, Let's say if there is need for  10 and it is balanced as 5 and 5 or 8 and 2?

3) If at most, the system only needs  8 streams, can  one deploy only EBRA, no EBRA proxy?

4) According the the EMC Networker and VMware documents,  EBRA should use 4 * 2HGHz CPU.  What Generation Intel CPU is being referenced here?

5) When creating the new VBA Policy, the window for Index Management only shows Retention Policy, there is no Browse policy.  Does this mean only image backup is supported?  no file backup option?  (but the document shows retention and browse policy)

6) What is the roadmap for EBRA regarding CLI?

Your help is appreciated.

I can't manually hot-add one snapshot vmdk file to another VM.

Hi.

Due to a backup issue, (hot-add jobs fail over to network mode), Veeam support suggest me to try to add a snapshot disk manually.

I did the next steps:

- Take one snapshot.

- Edit settings of another VM.

- Add existing disk (Independent/Non persistent). (Selecting the vmdk generated by the snapshot)

Always the same error:

My VM's are located on a NFS 3 datastore.

Anyone have any idea about how to solve it ?

Unable to verify vCenter listening on specified HTTP Port.  Please re-check values and try again

Ive double checked and vcenter is listening on this port all other credentials are correct as ive deployed version 5.8 sucsessfully last week using the same credentials. Ive also checked the host file on the backup appliance and this shows the correct ip's anyone else getting the same?? Or have any idea what i can double check next?

Thanks

1.  Do i need to present all the luns to Netbackup master server also to take san free backup of Vmware .

2. How it is possible to do the same thing without presenting all the luns to Master/Backup server.

VADP using NBD: what network port on ESX server is used for data transfer?

$
0
0

I've gone through a bunch of VMware documentation (including the API guide) and can't seem to find this documented anywhere.

I have an environment where we will be bringing 10GbE ports online on a couple of ESX servers and want to make sure the VADP traffic uses that port. This will be a dedicated flat network so I'm assuming ESX will be smart enough to resolve the proxy host (this is with NetBackup 7.1 with VMware Access Host), see what network its on and send out the traffic through the appropriate interface.

If you have multiple VMkernel ports defined (for example, one dedicated   for vMotion and another on a separate VLAN or dedicated 10GbE link for   NFS datastores or dedicated for mangement traffic), what is the logic  to  decide which VMkernel port to use?

I know with ESXi this changes slightly as there no longer a service  console port, and when configuring a new network port you only have  connection types for Virtual Machine (VM port group) or VMkernel. But  when adding a VMkernel port, you can specifically select the port  properties to include: vMotion, Fault Tolerance logging and Management  Traffic. I guess the question there is: do any of these port properties  HAVE to be selected in order for the NFC traffic to use the port, or  will it use any VMkernel port... and if so, which VMkernel port  (hopefully it will be smart enough to try to use one on the same subnet  if it exists). And if any of the properties are selected (vMotion, Fault Tolerance logging or Management Traffic), would this specifically EXCLUDE those interfaces for NBD (NFC) traffic?

Any help or pointers to where this is documented would be great.

Thanks.

vDP 5.1.0 Upgrade to 5.1.1 Issues

$

I grabbed the ISO (VMwareVDPUpgradeFrom61To-6.1.80-179) from the download area and downloaded it onto my local PC.  From there, I ran an MD5 checksum on it and it checked out ok.  Proceeded to then upload it to a shared ISO datastore we have specifically for mounting ISO images across all hosts.

After shutting down, setting disks to dependent and taking the snapshot (as suggested in the vDP documentation), I restarted the appliance.  Connected the ISO to the vDP appliance using the usual Edit options and made sure it was connected successfully.  It appears to connect in the client, ok all good, so far.

Log into the vDP web configuration, click the Upgrade tab and get the message: "To upgrade your vDP appliance please connect a valid ISO image to the appliance."  Read the direction some more and found you may have to wait a while and to keep logging out and re-logging in.  After a bit, figure something is wrong, so I disconnect the ISO from the appliance and reupload the ISO to the datastore.  Attempt 2, same as attempt 1.

So, I figure, maybe it's being corrupted on upload to the datastore so I connect the CDROM to the local ISO file on my computer that passed the checksum.  Wait a while, cycle logging in and out many times, etc...  Still get the same message so I go back to the shared ISO image.

Fooled around in the shell a bit to see if it was mounting.  Checked the usual /mnt and /media areas.  Within /mnt is an auto folder with the cdrom mounted (/mnt/auto/cdrom).  It has the file: VMwareVDPUpgradeFrom61To-6.1.80-179.avp contained within it.

In the performance metrics of the shared ISO datastore, I can watch the IOPS go up when I mount the ISO to the appliance then about 5 mins later drop back down with no activity after that.

Ended up restarting the appliance with the ISO still connected, just to see if it would pick it up at boot time.  Let it boot completely, then watch the datastore IOPS for a bit until they settle down again.  Log into the vdp-configure web client again, let everything refresh, click the Upgrade tab and hooray, the upgrade is there.

Few thoughts: I may have attempted to connect the ISO while the appliance was still booting after taking the snapshot.  Waiting 10+ minutes for a server to boot is a hard thing to do... This may have messed up the drive mapping or something (even though I could still see the drive in /dev/ and see the cdrom mounted in /mnt/auto/cdrom).

Basically putting this up in case someone runs into the issues I did.

vDP simply does not work

I have almost had it with this product (or at least this release).

I did a very simple Backup of my VM, and tried to do a restore.  The VM is running Ubuntu (if that makes any difference)?, and its VMDK files are around 40GB total.

So far, the  vmdk files of the "Restore" are 80GB+ and growing, with the restore progress meter at 92% and no signs of stopping.

What use is a backup/restore product if you can't trust it?

Off to log another support request...

Virtual Machine backup and recovery.

Hi,

We have VSphere 5.0 and would like to find easy way to backup virtual machines not only file level but in case of some problems we would like to be able to easy  restore virtual machine as cost of having virtual machine down is way more expensive than any software.

I had few good reviews on Veeam backup and recovery so my question would be what would be the best software to do virtual machine backup. Price is not an issue here as having one VM down for 3 hours may cost hundreds of thousands.

What would you recoomend it may be Vmware solution or third party doesnt matter.

VSA CommVault SIMPANA 10 SP9 VSA - Unable to read the disk for virtual machine

Hallo VMware Community,

we are running VSA Backup of CommVault SIMPANA. We are using a VSA Proxy. To the Proxy the VMFS-5 LUNs are mapped read-only so that we can use SAN as transport mode for the VMs which are located on that datastores.

We have testet many things but always still getting the error message "Failure Reason:Could not read data from the virtual disk" and the Job failed. At the beginning we started with one Subclient for all the VMs but now we switched to one Subclient per VM so that the jobs are running sequentially step by step but the error still occurs.

We are running the latest version of VMware ESXi and also the latest version of the vSphere Server.

Maybe someone of you is also using VSA backup of SIMPANA and can help us to resolve this issue.

Thanks a lot

Best Regards

Slow throughput on vSphere and Arcserve r15 VDDK

Hey Guys,

I am recently experiencing a performance issue with Arcserve R 15.0 on vSphere 4.1 using VDDK. Without any documented change to our backup environment certain VM Guests have slowed down to 300mb/min on backing up from our FC SAN.

Ive ensured they are no previous snapshots and that other vm guests on the same datastore backup as expected. I have also verified other vm guests on the same hosts as the troubled guests backup as expected, and I looked inside the guest's os at the fragmentation on the drives and everything looks normal.

I have all the necessary logging turned on in Arcserve and do not see anything really unusually. I have verified the VMDatastoreTypes.ini file has the SAN setting of 0 for the problem vm's.

Can anyone shed some light on this issue or point me in the right direction?

thanks
