Nakivo backup, failed to remove snapshot

$

Hi,

I've used Nakivo Backup & Replication with ESXi 5.5 for a long time without any issues. Iv'e recently upgraded to a new host with ESXI 6.5u1 and now I'm having problems backing up my guests.

The problem is that a full initial backup works 100% but following incremental backups almost always result in guest shutting down. The issue is that Nakivo will try and remove the sanpshot after a completed backup job but the guest is still using that snapshot. This gives me the error that the *-00001.vmdk is corrupt and the guest cannot boot.

I'v tried everyting, even a support call with two techs from Nakivo and they belive that this is a problem with vmware and not nakivo.

Please help...

VMware NetBackup Errors

In vCenter (6.7), all of our successful Symantec NetBackup jobs show with Type "Error".

We had reached out to NetBackup support and received the following response:

"NetBackup only communicates to VMware via the VDDK API.  From a NetBackup perspective, if the jobs are successful in the Activity Monitor with no errors, then the backup image was created, captured, and stored properly.  Any errors within the VMware environment should be investigated from a VMware perspective.”

We verified the backups are actually successful by restoring a few VMs.

Is there any option to set this particular event "event.com.veritas.netbackup.success.V2.fullFormat" to show a status of "information" instead of "Error"?

VDR and Edit Comments issue

Has anyone else ever seen this with VDR?  It has been a constant source of annoyance for me since VDR 1.0.

Occasionally, my attempt to Edit Comments on a mounted destinations fails.  The change in the Comments will not take place.  Worse, the destination becomes unavailable for Backup jobs or Integrity checks.

During the early days of VDR, I attributed this to VDR quirkiness and vowed to not edit comments.  However,  even with Appliance version 1.2.1.1616, and plug-in 1.2.1.3 I still see this problem.

Later, I thought it another sympton of the problems I have in backing up to the Iomega ix4-200r NAS.  Problems still unresloved to this day I might add.

However, while testing a QNAP NAS, the problem occurred again yet the QNAP has shown excellent backup reliability.  So I concluded this issue was indeed with VDR and since no one in this forum has ever brought it up nor does it show in the Knowledge Base, there is something about my software install on this and other laptops we use that induces the problem.

Restarting VDR, removing and re-adding the destination disk to VDR, reformatting the destination disk, none of it helps.  But today I shutdown VDR, disabled and enabled the plug-in, restarted VDR and bingo I could edit the comments for that particular destination disk.

I will try this again the next time it happens to see if it has the same effect and report back to this thread.

Can not create snapshot for 1TB VM Guest on ESXi 4 Host

$

I have an ESXi 4.1 host with local storage.  I am trying to use a third party backup product called PHD that uses snapshots to backup VMs.  I have a 1TB VM that is on a local storage data  store that only has about 190GB free.   I am receiving an error that a snap shot can not be created due to space.

My question is this, is there away around this?  I have another local data store on that host that has about 500GB free.  Is it possible to use that other data store for this VM's snapshots?

Any helpd would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

VDP: How to manually stop a Backup Job?

Hi,

Is there a way to manually stop a running VDP Backup Job? There is no such an option in the VDP web interface. If I do "Cancel" on running Tasks, the task itself is cancelled, but VDP Backup Job is still running...

Snapshot SQL Server

Snapshot of SQL 2008 Server fails with "cannot create a quiesced snapshot...exceeded time limit for holding off I/O" is due to the number of IO's? Is snapshoting SQL supported and is there a good solution to fast backup/restore options in case of server failure (hardware or software)?

VDP vs VDR

$

Hi everybody,

i couldnt help myself starting this conversation.

i was very suprised for VDR being shutdown.

i knew VDR would be updated, but was not expectng so soon, since the latest 2.01 was released not so long ago.

i found out VDP was out when updating to vsphere 5.1 and there was no VDR plugin to vcenter.

Anyway i am really dissapointed in VDP, to say the least!

First it depends on SSO and the vmware web client. i couldnt believe: i had to use the slowest gui i have ever used, (not as slow as backup exec 2012 thought!) so much more complicated.

second, you cannot choose the partitions to backup! This is unbelievable! the use i gave VDR was to backup the boot partitions of windows vms!

the other partitions usually have data, that are daily backed up to tape.

so at this time with VDP i have to backup a vm with 700GB in disks, when with vdr i only backup up C: partition with 50GB! hilarious

third, i am obliged to choose between aplliances, that cannot be expanded. In VDR you could mount a partition with any size, anytime!

now i must choose the 2TB VPD appliance because i didnt want to risk not having enough storage in the future, and didnt want to bother having to install more VDP appliances ( they come configured with 4 CPU!)

fourth, it is way harder, not to say impossible, dont know for sure, to reuse a damaged VDP disks, to recover all previous backups.

in VDR all you need was to keep the data partition intact, run a new vdr appliance, mount the data partition from the previous VDR, check integrity and ready to go! VDR lets you use a external disk to store in a safe, using it like tapes!

fifth, minor issue: when backing up, VDP inserts VM costume field "com.vmware.vdr.is-protected" as true

But you know, its not vdr its VDP, and this field should only changed after the backup, not before! and if something goes wrong in the backup, if you try to delete the field, VDP automatically inserts it again.

for these reasons, i am forced to use backup exec, without the miracle of deduplication to backup only boot partitions.

i hope vmware solves these major issues very soon, dedup is precious, and VDR was just right.

thanks

Where to place my VDP

Hi

I want to organise offsite backups.

so i have a 3 node esx cluster (4i) at dc1 and I have 2 other DC.  dc2 which is just nfs storage (was /am using cdr and nfs mount, but when it fails it takes forever to recheck and get it all working again !)  i have ybo - which is the office, I have an esx 5i server there.

I am trialing using vdp install at ybo and storing to ybo. it backups up all my prod stuff from dc1. I have 100M link.. of course it get saturated ..

but I am thinking it might be better to have the VDP box in dc1 and saving to ybo .. that way all the de dup happens before it touches the wire.  But I don't want to be stuck like vdr with 2-3 day integrity checks... Those suck.

My prod storage is equial logic, i am looking at doing equal logic replication.. but that is not for backups, those are stored on qnap boxs.  and they use rsync to sync files.  I don't think using qnap rsync is the way to go to syncing my VDP data store sounds like it is frought with danger !

so i am wondering what others are doing .... I did start to look at veem, but the cost for our size ....

I did start to look at the vmware storage appliance, but it sounds like a dog

Remarkable bad user interface into vdp

This has to be the worst interface. keep locking up, you can't configure more than 2 at a time.

I have 4 vdp's added them, went to configure them... 1st is okay 2nd is okay, 3rd blank screen, flash locks up ... have to reload the entire web clien then went to to vdp 3 and then 4 (had to try that a few time)

Trying to test weather my backups have worked .... again can't touch to many at the same time!

VDP Appliance died overnight

HI

spent the weekend upgrading to the latest 5.1.11 image.  it ran fine for 2 days, did backups did checkpoint ... not a problem. then I come in Wed and It says it has had a problem and to roll back to last CP.. Problem is no CP's.  I have tried rebooting it, I tried logging into the web console and see what services are there. core service will not start.

So I log a case with Support. well 2 hours of .... not sure exactly what .... any way I have uploaded the bundled log files we will see what happens.

So there was no sign of any issues (in fact i had test rebooted it a few times to make sure it was okay and ran it for a few days with no problems), Now I am left with absolutely  nothing.

Seems like VMware support have no idea and have to raise it with EMC.

Seems like there are lots of errors in the log files, but my support guys doesn't know.

This is very annoying and worry some.

VDR 2 and my hair loss!

$

Hi

I took over a ESX cluster that was using VDR as the backup tool.

Each VDR VM has 2 data stores 1 local and 1 remote DC

There are 2 VDR's one in the data center and 1 in the Office.

The remote datastore is at at 3rd Datacentre.

I have yet to get 2 weeks of backups running with out there being some issue, some sort of corruption in the remote data store. (and some but not as many on the local datastore).

I am finding it very annoying and very un reliable

What are the alternatives.... I like being able to store stuff local for quick restores and I must have offsite backups.  And I reall really like the dedup facility .  I just hate the fragile nature of VDR....

vDP 5.8 Integrity Check Time

Is it possible to force the integrity check to a certain time, we've set the the maintenance window but integrity check always occurs 15:00-16:00, which is outside of the mantenance window.  It seems that it ignores the configuration so is there a setting or command that defines this?

Hi all,

We had a problem with a Backup job and we had to cancel the job.

But for some reason there are entries in the recent task list which are not removed and stay in the list.

Does someone know, how can we remove these entries from the list?
