Restoring directly to an ESXi host with VMware Data Protection (VDP)

Can I use VMware Data Protection to restore directly to an ESXi host, or do I have to have vCenter Server up and running? (If the VM I'm trying to restore is vCenter Server itself, then it won't work unless I can restore to an ESXi host directly without using vCenter Server...)

I have installed VMware Data Protection 5.5. Then the backup starting i see next error:

An unexpected error occurred with the following error code: 10014. More information may be available in the client logs which can be downloaded from the configuration application

(https://<VDP hostname>:8543/vdp-configure).

Hi,

For few days VDP has not been able to complete integrity check launched from

web client so I tried running it manually:

1. Stop all VDP services (dpnctl stop)

2. Unmount the mount point (umount /data0X)

3. Run xfs_check (xfs_check /dev/sdxy)

4. Mount data0X (mount -a)

5. start services (dpnctl start all)

6. stop maintenance services (dpnctl stop maint)

7. create checkpoint (avmaint checkpoint --ava)

8. Run full hfscheck (avmaint hfscheck --full --ava)

8b. check hfscheck (avmaint hfscheckstatus --ava)

9. Start maint (dpnctl start maint)

Ref: https://communities.vmware.com/message/2271165

But every time I end up with error:

Last hfscheck failed with result MSG_ERR_HFSCHECKERRORS : started Tue Jan 14 16:02:19 2014 ended Tue Jan 14 20:42:22 2014, nodes queried/replied/total(1/1/1)

VDP version is 5.5.5.180

Any ideas what to try next?

Clean install is also possible, but I'd like to know the root cause for this and avoid it in the future.

Thanks!

Veeam, snapshots, consolidation etc...

I am helping a buddy out and running into roadblocks for his problem.

I'm not a Veeam guy and stay away from the snapshots when I can so with that....

I am seeing a ton of ghost? missing in action snapshots or phantom open snaps when i browse the datastore but when in snapshot manager there is nothing there.

I have read taking a snapshot and checking the Quiesce Guest file system, then deleting the open snap. However this works 75% of the time I run into a VM that I have to power the system down clone the machine and wait.... then power on the clone and delete the troublesome VM. Time to time I get this error

"An error occurred while consolidating disks: msg.fileio.lock."

I am wondering if this is the case of Veeam or snapshots in general for any other snap based backup.

Personally I am a user of BackupExec and just doing file level backups.

I am adding a screenshot from a datastore of the problem I am seeing.

Any thoughts would be great.

Unable to access VDP Configuration Manager or FLR from Chrome

I have noticed that I am unable to access both the VDP Configuration Manager or FLR from chrome starting in the last couple weeks.  It looks like the VDP appliance is still using a self-signed certificate signed with the SHA-1 algorithm and I wonder if that is cause.  Has anyone else noticed this?  If so is there a way to reissue the certificate so chrome will accept it?  I have noticed this on both VDP 5.5.8 and 6.

Multiple backup products over VADP

Hi, would like to check is it possible to have 2 backup products backing up via vSphere VADP using CBT?

A scenario will be backup product A performing full & incremental backup of VMs using VADP, and another product performing VM incremental replication.

Thanks.

Does Backing Up Virtual Machines Save Snapshots Too?

$

Hi All,

I'm rather new to the world of VMs. I have been researching backup solutions for VMs for the last few days. I have found suggestions to perform backups by:

  • Export to an OVF template
  • Browse the DataStore and Download/Upload the files back to other inventories.

My question is: If I have a number of different Virtual Machines with each one having about 2 snapshots each, is it somehow possible to create a backup of the entire VM and also have the Snapshots backed up as well so that if I restored the VM on a different host the VM would work as before and the Snapshot Manager would still show the snapshots? I searched forums for a while and couldn't find any valuable information.

I have tried exporting to an OVF template and the server seemed to be cloned just like it was on the other host, but the snapshots in the Snapshot manager were lost.

Please let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks.

I have successfully signed the OVF package with ovftool 4.2. The certificate was signed by a Root CA.

Now the problem is that vSphere Web Client runs into the following error during Deploy OVF Template.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Backup Cannot be performed while VDP Server is in Admin state

After a few days of good VDP working i noticed in the event viewer several errors like this:
VDP: Appliance has changed from Full Access to
Read Only.  Backup functionality is no longer available
.......
VDP: Appliance has changed from Read Only to
Full Access. Backups and restores should be fully
functional.
.......
VDP: Appliance has changed from Full Access to
Admin.  Backup functionality is no longer
available.
......
VDP: Appliance has changed from Admin to Read
Only.  Backup functionality is no longer available.
and now i'm again in Admin, and any type of Backup fails.
How can I go back to "Full Access" and set the system so that i never end up in Read-Only or Admin State? And  what they mean?
Thanks in Advance

VDP: How to manually stop a Backup Job?

Hi,

Is there a way to manually stop a running VDP Backup Job? There is no such an option in the VDP web interface. If I do "Cancel" on running Tasks, the task itself is cancelled, but VDP Backup Job is still running...

VDP: [004] The VDP appliance datastore is approaching maximum capacity

$

Hi,

I've got this alarm "VDP: [004] The VDP appliance datastore is approaching maximum capacity" because the datastore where i have the VDP virtual disks is almost with the exact size of the virtual disks.

I've disabled the alarm, but everytime i reboot the VDP appliance the alarm recreated and enabled.

Is there any way to make VDP not recreate this alarm definition?

The vSphere Data Protection alert is triggered. vdp01: VDP: [014] Backup Recovery services are not running

Every day, during the backup window receives about 10 alerts like this.

Backups take longer than 12 hours to finalize

Does anyone have any idea how to solve this?

Openfiler NFS Backup Error (12)

$

Good Day Everyone,

I am performing a backup of some VMs to an Openfiler NFS Datastore using GhettoVCB. One of my VMs is quite large at 125GB. While performing the backup, i get the following error: "Failed to clone disk: Input/output error (327689). DISKLIB-LIB : Unable to get file system ID for filename The destination file system does not support large files (12).".

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?  Normally I perform backups to an NFS datastore on a Netapp Storevault 500 server with no issues. However, moving to an Openfiler Server with an NFS datastore, this issue has appeared.

Thanks

Stevester

vSphere 6.5 VDP 6.1.4 VMware Tools outdated

$

Hello,

This has been an ongoing issue with the last few VDP versions.

I update vSphere to the latest version (in this case 6.5.0 5224529) and then the VMware tools on VDP appliances throws a warning that it is out of date.

I learned the hard way that you cannot simply perform the "Upgrade VMware Tools" automatically... it just uninstalls it and then cannot install the new version.

In the past I would just update to the newest version of VDP (in this case 6.1.4) and the problem would go away.

However, it hasn't gone away...

1. Is this problem really hurting anything? Backups seem to be ok.

2. Is there a KB or something that acknowledges this issue and/or provides a fix?

Thanks!

VDP Change IP Address

Can you change the IP address of a VDP appliance?  I have gone in through the web GUI and changed it this way, however, upon boot it is still trying to access its old IP?  I know that in the documentation it states if you pick the wrong address you will have to redeploy, but... that just seems strange to me.

Anyone?

VDR: Slow Integrity check

$

I have a VDR store that has a size of 180 GB. Integrity check started the first time this morning at 01:00 am. Now it is almost 6:00pm and it is still running with a progress of 20% !http://communities.vmware.com/message/1274241/!!

Why is it so slow. Performance during backup operations to this datastore is quite good.

I see lots of the following messages on the console of the VDR machine:

CIFS VFS: send error in read = -12

Status code returned 0x0000205 NT_STATUS_INSUFF_SERVER_RESOURCES

The "stop" function does not work. It gets grey and does nothing.

On shutdown i get the the error

Unmounting CIFS filesystem: unmount: /10.133.1.20/vmwaredr: device is busy

CIVS VFS: server not responding

CIFS VFS: No response to cmd 46 mid 27233

CIFS VFS: Send error in read = -11

The backup destination is a Windows 2003 Server and i It has enough free space, memory and CPU ressources.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
