VDP vs VDR

$

Hi everybody,

i couldnt help myself starting this conversation.

i was very suprised for VDR being shutdown.

i knew VDR would be updated, but was not expectng so soon, since the latest 2.01 was released not so long ago.

i found out VDP was out when updating to vsphere 5.1 and there was no VDR plugin to vcenter.

Anyway i am really dissapointed in VDP, to say the least!

First it depends on SSO and the vmware web client. i couldnt believe: i had to use the slowest gui i have ever used, (not as slow as backup exec 2012 thought!) so much more complicated.

second, you cannot choose the partitions to backup! This is unbelievable! the use i gave VDR was to backup the boot partitions of windows vms!

the other partitions usually have data, that are daily backed up to tape.

so at this time with VDP i have to backup a vm with 700GB in disks, when with vdr i only backup up C: partition with 50GB! hilarious

third, i am obliged to choose between aplliances, that cannot be expanded. In VDR you could mount a partition with any size, anytime!

now i must choose the 2TB VPD appliance because i didnt want to risk not having enough storage in the future, and didnt want to bother having to install more VDP appliances ( they come configured with 4 CPU!)

fourth, it is way harder, not to say impossible, dont know for sure, to reuse a damaged VDP disks, to recover all previous backups.

in VDR all you need was to keep the data partition intact, run a new vdr appliance, mount the data partition from the previous VDR, check integrity and ready to go! VDR lets you use a external disk to store in a safe, using it like tapes!

fifth, minor issue: when backing up, VDP inserts VM costume field "com.vmware.vdr.is-protected" as true

But you know, its not vdr its VDP, and this field should only changed after the backup, not before! and if something goes wrong in the backup, if you try to delete the field, VDP automatically inserts it again.

for these reasons, i am forced to use backup exec, without the miracle of deduplication to backup only boot partitions.

i hope vmware solves these major issues very soon, dedup is precious, and VDR was just right.

thanks

Problem with consolidation, "Cannot allocate memory"

I have a big problem with consolidation VM disks, and with VDR at all.

A few days ago VDR was trying to make backup and remove snapshhoot on mail server (1 TB disk), and result was a new 219 delta disks in one night!

Another result of that was that my connection with vCenter is going doing after few seconds I am connected.

After many hours I realize that connection is going down becouse mail server (with 219 disks) is in inventory, althouh it is not powered on.

I can connet directly on esx host, remove VM from inventory and then I can connet on vCenter with that host.

Automatic consolidation did not work (Cannot allocate memory) so I try to manually clone this disk with vmkfstools but after 52% I get message:

"Failed to clone disk: Cannot allocate memory (786441)."

I tried with thin disk (vmkfstools -i ... -d thin) but nothing.

I tried to set parameter VMFS3.MaxHeapSizeMB in advanced settings on maximum.

I even upgraded esx and vCenter on 5.1 version.

I appreciate any advice.

Vsphere Center Server failed backup errors

My company is running VmWare Vsphere center server 5.0.0.  Just about everyday we get an alert that the backups failed.  I am new to Vmware and I am not sure why this is happening.  I have included one of the alerts below so that hopefully someone can help me figure this out.  Please excuse me if I leave something out as I have explained I am new to Vmware.  If anyone needs more info please let me know.

Monitoring vSphere Data Protection Status using cli/script

Hi,

I found that the backup scheduler service stopped running in the vSphere Data Protection Status in VDP Config Utility.

I would like to monitor service status using a script.

I noticed that PowerCLI + avamar.psm1 perhaps could be used for this but I can´t find any documents or reference for this?

Can´t event find the avamar.psm1 file?

A plus would be to also be able to get failed backups for the last day using a script. That way I could also send a warning message when this occurrs.

This way I could integrate this with our central monitoring system.

Thanks for any suggestions...

VDP Backup for ESXI

Hi,

I am running two node cluster of esxi.Running around 10 vm in total with capacity ranging from 300GB to 750 GB.

Got a NAS box and thinking of attaching the backing up the vm on this storage. Can provision it as NFS or CIFS only.

Few questions;

1.Would like know does mean by the limit of .5TB,1TB or 2TB in VDP appliances?

2.Does .5TB is limit for CIFS,1TB for NFS and 2TB on VMFS store?Does this means destination store where I going to keep backup of VM?

3.As size of total VM/s in my case is around 3TB to 4TB does that mean I can't backup all my vm with one appliance or matter of fact with  2 appliance?

4. FAQ says one appliance per ESXI that means I have limit of 2 appliances in 2 host cluster?

Error #1009 after upgrading from 5.5.6 to 5.8.0

Environment:

  • vCenter Server 5.1.0-1123961
  • ESXi 5.1.0-1065491
  • VDP 5.5.6.180

Followed the usual upgrade procedure:

  1. VDP Appliance snapshotted
  2. Mounted ISO containing 5.8.0 upgrade
  3. Started upgrade from service web console

The problem: logging in on vSphere Webclient produces an "Error #1009" as follows...

undefined.png

Found this KB about "wrong URLs informed on vApp properties", but VDP is not an vApp and there is no such configuration... how can this be fixed without upgrade vCenter Server to 5.5u2?

Update #1: now even rolling back the snapshot to VDP 5.5.6, the vCenter Server still shows the Error #1009... and is also showing the wrong version information on it. Any help we'll appreciate.

Recovery from a total failure

I am evaluating vSphere 6 and in testing backup I can't figure out how you would restore to VMDK that VDP made when I no longer have vsphere client or or vSphere data protection running. Let me explain let say I have 10 vm running on 3 hosts all the VM or have the same NFS storage they are running from, including the vsphere and the VDP vm. Now let say we have a complete failure of that NFS host now all my VM are down but I did have VDP making backups on another NSF server. How do I get everything backup and running.

VDP stop working after domain administrator password change.

We recently changed domain administrator password and stop the domain administrator permission to the vCentre. Looks like now the VDP machine stop working.

The symptoms are: cannot access VDP via web, only ssh.

I looked trough the vdr-server.log and there are a lot of these errors:

I tried the dpnctl start all but it errors (see attached file).

Those machine worked until few days ago and now they gone!

Does anyone know how to resolve these issue?

Thanks in advance.

Help with my VDP, disk full issue

my VDP version is 6.0.2, when I first ran my backup jobs it got problem.

Appliance status stopped at "admin" status and refused to get back to "normal".

"gsan" service was degraded. From the logs I can see it might caused by disk full, but even I cleared all my restore points, disk space won't be reclaimed because appliance status is "admin".

Here are some of my logs, anyone can help? Thanks a lot.

Crash-consistent backups in VDP

Hi everybody

I have installed the vSphere Data Protection 6.1 and since few days the backup of a VM is "crash-consistent". The other VMs don't have this problem and all the backups are "application-consistent".

What is the meaning of this type of backup?

What can I do to solve this issue?

Thx in advance, sincerely Omar

Greetings! We have a client that has very limited bandwidth to replicate their data between data centers. Purchasing additional bandwidth is a challenge due to the location of primary and secondary infrastructure. They are asking us if it would be recommended (and if there would be any issues as a result of ) to move snapshot delta files to another, non-replicated datastore, as they only maintain snapshots when actively patching and then immediately commit them. They are using SRM along with SAN-based replication. We know that redirecting snapshot delta files is possible, however, were not immediately certain if it would break anything with remote site recovery with SRM. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Please, help my VDP DIsk full issues.

My VDP version is 6.1(based EMC).

VDP Backup schedule is not running, because that appliance state is "admin" status.

"gsan" service was degraded. From the logs I can see it might caused by disk full, but even I cleared all my restore points, disk space won't be reclaimed because appliance status is "admin".

Here are some of my VDP state, anyone can help? Thank you so much.

vDP 6.1.3 and vCenter 6.5 - No vDP in Home Screen, No Client Plug-In Appearing

$

Hi All,

I've been struggling with another issue in my home lab.  I upgraded to vCenter 6.5 last week and, at the same time, deployed a new vDP 6.1.3 appliance.  Try as I might, I can't seem to get the plug-in to appear anywhere within vCenter.

I have gone into the extensions section of http://<vcenter>/mob and only see config.vmware.vdp2.config.  I can't seem to get config.vmware.vdp2 to show up, even if I delete the .config entry and restart/re-register the vDP appliance.

I have also done the workaround where you log into the vCenter server and add the .war and .jar file manually into the vsphere-client directory, with no luck.

Anyone else seeing this issue?

Thanks,

Dave

How to Backup VM without turning it off.??

Can any one in this group help me in this Task.

Backup a VM without turning it  off.

How to reclaim space in VDP

$

Hi,

I am just worried about the space occupied by VDP Appliance backups at it has crossed 70%. The datastore in VCenter is also 80% filled. Now when I try to delete the old backups , the VDP appliance reclaims the free space but that free space is not getting reflected on datastore. The datastore still showing same used space even after clearing more than 200 GB from VDP Appliance.

Any suggestion please!

Regards,

Hiren Shinde.

Backup Cannot be performed while VDP Server is in Admin state

After a few days of good VDP working i noticed in the event viewer several errors like this:
VDP: Appliance has changed from Full Access to
Read Only.  Backup functionality is no longer available
.......
VDP: Appliance has changed from Read Only to
Full Access. Backups and restores should be fully
functional.
.......
VDP: Appliance has changed from Full Access to
Admin.  Backup functionality is no longer
available.
......
VDP: Appliance has changed from Admin to Read
Only.  Backup functionality is no longer available.
and now i'm again in Admin, and any type of Backup fails.
How can I go back to "Full Access" and set the system so that i never end up in Read-Only or Admin State? And  what they mean?
Thanks in Advance

vSphere Data Protection stucks at 92% on Windows 2008 R2 VMs

I'm having issues with backing up Windows 2008 R2 VM using data protection... it stucks at 92 % and lasts like forever, unless I cancel the job. Does anyone have solution to this already? I've seen a lot from the community...

VDP Fails with Error E10052 - Seems VMs freeze while VDP backs up.

Hello Everyone,

So, I'm working with VDP and trying to backup 7 vms. I don't have this issue at any other client of ours. I have a client that the VDP runs at the default time set and fails to backup all the servers. I have yet to have it backup every server without any issues.

The error in vSphere Web Client tells me the following:

VDP: Backup job (*****) failed to backup client ******. Execution error: E10052:Failed to create snapshot.. Job ID: ******************** (Full Client path: )

After browsing around I was able to finally find the avamarclient logs and received a bit more information on the root issue here:

After the VDP Job fails. I notice that the snap is actually there, as I check the Snapshot Manager and see the "VDP-Job###" listed.

So, when I rerun the job manually it goes ahead and removes the VDP-Snapshot. Then begins to re-snap the VM. I know these VMs lock up for less than a minute when VDP runs. I feel as if when Virtual Center is being snapped it freezes the I/O on that VM and makes VDP lose it's connection to vCenter Server and then fails the VDP backup. So, we thought to get another set of 1TB Drives and put them in a RAID-1 Configuration and create another datastore to strictly be dedicated for VDP backups.

Even after this implementation we still are seeing the issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to try to get VDP working properly. Also, I have redeployed mutliple times to ensure it wasn't corruption in VDP itself.

Thank you to anyone who assists !
