VDP not sending Summary Report since Sunday (time change).

I just noticed that the (4) VDP appliances I am testing all stopped sending the Email Summary Report after the Daylight Savings time change on Sunday. the last report was generated Sunday morning at 12:00am. Now all the appliances are reporting this:

VDP: Send email summary report error. The email summary report timer is set to the incorrect hour. It does not match the vdrdb value.

The time this error is generated is 11:00:00pm which is exactly one hour from when it should be running.

I think this is a Daylight Savings time issue but dont know how to address it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

VCB quiescing and documentation

$

Trying to get quiescing scripts to work in ESX 4 (same goes for 3.5 U4 by the way) i discovered that the documentation is either incomplete, or just plain incorrect.

I'm only talking about Windows VMs here, but in several posts on this community and other forums, i see that the same goes for Linux guests.

The VCB backup guide states 2 different locations for freeze scripts:

- pre ESX 3.5 U2: pre-freeze-script.bat and post-thaw-script.bat in c:\Windows

- 3.5 U2 and later: only 1 script that takes freeze and thaw as arguments, located in Vmware Tools program directory, subdirectory backupscripts.d

On both ESX 4U1 and 3.5 U4, using VCB 1.5 U1 i had problems getting freeze scripts to work when using the path and script format described in the documentation.

In the hostd.log of the ESX host i found entries that showed C:\Windows\pre-freeze-script.bat being started, instead of the script i would expect, based on the documentation, so i put the scripts there, and they worked.

So what's that all about?

Is there anyone who can provide correct information on the usage of freeze scripts, and where they should be put? (please don't direct me to the documentation on the Vmware website, i have read that and it is wrong, like i described above)

Does it make a difference if i have the Vmware VSS provider installed or not? (both cases i had the problem with, did not, and i haven't tested it in a vm that had it installed yet)

VDR email notifications working...

We've managed to get email notifications working from our VDR installation (1.1.0.707).  It certainly is not the most elegant solution; but I am hoping by sharing it with the community that it can be made much better.

There is an MTA running in the VDR; but I had no idea what the ramifications of configuring it would be.  So we went a much simpler route.

I installed the telnet (telnet-0.17-39.el5.x86_64.rpm); and wrote a script to compare the prior list of logged errors found to the current list of errors found.  A cron job runs every 15 minutes and an email is sent (via telnet) when new error messages are found.

I have attached our shell script and the rpm to this posting for your review.  Please be gentle  8^)

CreateSnapshot failed

Hi there.

I am trying to backup my VM systems using the VEEAM backup software.

We have licensed VMware vSphere 4 Essentials.

The guest OS I try to backup is a MS Windows 2003 Server R2 Standard x64 (with an installed MS SQL Express Edition database). The VMware tools are installed in the newest version (v8.1.3 build-203739). VSS was activated in the VMware tools installation process.

If I now try to start a backup job in VEEAM, I get two errors:

First error:

VssGAConn: Guest operation system is not supported, type EVeeamOsXP, platform EVeeamAmd64, version 5.2

Second error (I think this is the "major error"):

CreateSnapshot failed, vmRef "vm-40", timeout "1800000", snName "VEEAM BACKUP TEMPORARY SNAPSHOT", snDescription "Please do not delete this snapshot. It is being used by Veeam Backup.", memory "False", quiesce "True"

Can not create a quiesced snapshot Because the snapshot create operation exceeded the time limit for holding off I / O in the frozen virtual machine.

The veeam-support says this:

"It appears the snapshot operation cannot be performed manually, this would indicate an issue with VMware tools quiescence on that server. You will need to contact VMware support in regards to this operation failing."

I´m going crazy, because I dont know what I can do to solve the problem.

Perhaps anybody can help me here... ?!

Thank you in advance.

BackupExec 2010 Thin VMDK but Thick Backup

Hi,

I'm trying BackupExec 2010 R2 AVVI to backup some virtual machines on a NetApp NFS datastore. All machines have thin provisioned disks. I'm using NDBSSL transport mode.

Every time I do a backup of a thin provisioned disk, BackupExec will backup all the provisioned space and not only the used storage, resulting in overly long backup jobs.

Is anyone having the same effect? Is this VADP problem, or BackupExec problem? Any workaround?

Thanks.

Can't take a snapshot with memory flag 0

Hello,

I have a problem with some guest on an esxi 5 host.

When I try to backup these VMs via the vadp (tsm for ve) I get the following error on the esx:

The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 5 The error message was: 'VssSyncStart' operation failed: IDispatch error #8454 (0x80042306)

The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 3 The error message was: Quiesce operation aborted
The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 3 The error message was: Error when notifying the sync provider.

I searched for a problem on the guests but could not find a solution.

So I tried to take a manual Snapshot via the vShpere client.

I noticed, that I was able to take a snapshot of these VMs with the memory flag = 1 and the quiesce flag = 1.

The problem only occurs when I try to take a snapshot with memory flag = 0 (quiesce works with both, 1 and 0).

Can anyone help me with that problem?

Veeam Bottleneck=Source

$

I'm using Veeam Backup & Recovery version 6.5 with VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1. The VM storage is local to the ESXi server in a RAID5 SAS array. Veeam is running on a separate physical machine and backing up over a 2 Gbps aggregated link, onto an external USB 2.0 hard drive.

Veeam seems to top out at about 22MB/s when performing a backup operation, and indicates that the bottleneck is the source. This seems too slow given the setup, and I'm wondering if I'm missing something. Can anyone shed any light on my situation?

VDP: Failed to attach disk

I'm evaluating vDP and have got the following trouble. After I changed SSL certificate at vCenter server, vDP jobs are failing permanently.

In the log I can see that vDP is trying to connect to the hypervisor where the VM is located. During connect disk mount fails with the error "unable to get local issuer certificate".

I can see that vDP is trying to connect to the port 902. I tried to verify that the certificate is correct using the following command:

echo -n | openssl s_client -connect $SERVERNAME:$PORTNUMBER | sed -ne '/-BEGIN CERTIFICATE-/,/-END CERTIFICATE-/p' > /tmp/$SERVERNAME.cert

I found that at port 443 certificate is correct, but at port 902 I get the following error:

140735160738656:error:140770FC:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:unknown protocol:s23_clnt.c:795:

$SERVERNAME here is a FDQN of the hypervisor.

I guess that means that port 902 is not protected with SSL. How can I fix that?

Update:

$ echo -n | openssl s_client -connect $SERVERNAME:902

CONNECTED(00000003)

vCenter VCSA ... to VDP or not to VDP?

$

There have been some discussions about the question whether it is a good idea to do VDP backups of your vCenter, and there seems to be some consense that it is OK to do it, and there are blogs like Protecting vCenter Server with vSphere Data Protection (VDP) 6.0 that demonstrate how a recovery could work.

What makes us hesitate are two facts:

  • Support recommended to us not to do VDP backups of vCenter, as creating the snapshot required to backup the vCenter VM might disrupt the connection of VDP appliance to vCenter.

  • We are running VCSA as vCenter, which is explicitly not supported for VDP: from the Admin Guide page 16:

"IMPORTANT VDP does not support backups of a vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA). The VDP virtual environment, however, can include a VCSA."

In our case, the alternative would be to install a Networker client into the vCenter VM, and perform backups. Of course, this is not supported, too.

So what should we do? Does anybody have practical experiences in doing VDP backups of vCenter?

Also, I would be interested in your opinions about VM supporters recommendations to not do VDP on vCenter, regardless of VCSA.

Thanks, Tom
