10 VDP appliance limit

$

Hello -

Does anyone know what options we have once we hit the 10 VDP appliance limit?  The limit sounds like it's imposed at the vCenter server level, so I'm assuming in we spin up another vCenter server, that would allow for another 10x appliances.  However, I have no experience with how it works in managing multiple vCenter servers.

Can a VDP appliance attached to one vCenter server back up a VM from another vCenter server?  I'm assuming the answer is no.  Also, I'm not sure that scaling a backup solution with new instances of vCenter server is a great strategy (in fact, I'm certain it's not :-) )

Does anyone know if the 10-appliance limit will go up in future versions, or if we can "buy up" once we hit the 10-appliance limit?  It seems like a strange limitation considering the scalability built into vCenter.  A single vCenter server can manage 100's of hypervisors and 1000's of VMs.  I can't imagine backing up 1000's of VMs with only 10 backup appliances.

I checked the data sheet for VDP "Advanced", but it has the same 10-appliance limit.  Also, given how slow VDP is, we'll probably go with Veeam if we go the pay-for route (we're currently using the free version of VDP).  Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Back-up Cluster Volume disk W2K8R2 Fail-over Cluster

Hi Guys,

We are currently running an Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 Fail-Over Cluster build on 2 VM's running on vSphere 5.0.

Because the cluster volume disk is connected by iSCSI we are not able to back-up this disk with our default tooling: Veeam B&R.

Currently we are protecting this volume on SAN level by Remote Snapshots. Actually i am looking for a user friendly way to protect and recover data from this cluster volume disk.

I am just curious about how and with which tooling you guys should back-up this cluster volume disk.

Cheers!

Vmware Data Protection - Backup done but email notification shows failed

Hi,

I'm using VDP to backup a Vcenter Linux Appliance amongst other VM, on a Vsphere 5.5 infrastructure.

Everything was just fine until the day the email notification indicated that de backup of my vmware appliance failed on every single backup (all the other vms are ok).

When I look further I realise that the backup is actually ok. I extracted the logs of failed clients from VDP web interface.

In the log there is only 1 warning.

Here is my log (warning in red...).

Where VDPA backup file located and how big?

As subject. Let set if anyone got some idea. I tried to backup something like 200G data, but just found the VDP appliance size increased just around 10G. Is it stored somewhere else? Many thanks for your reply in advance.

1) Are there any limitations on the maximum FC and Ethernet through-put supported by VDP advanced version ?

2) Maximum data size capability of 8TB by VDPA is combined of all the 10 VDP appliances (maximum supported per vCenter), or for a single appliance ?

3) If 8TB limit is for a single VDP appliance, then is it possible to manage 80 TB (using 10 VDP appliances) per vCenter server.

Thanks,

Sanjeev

Hi

We use Veeam BR to backup our Vmware environment, recently we have started so see Failed to create NFC download stream. The strange thing is

that Veeam retryies the job and then it goes sucessfull.

Veeam support response

So, SOAP connection to the host from the Veeam B&R server works intermittently - on the first run of the job it doesn't work, but works on retry. You could supply the VMware support with this information.

Hello.. My VDP appliance is in a read-only state and will not boot into read-write.

I don't understand the command I think its asking for i.e. bash# mount -n -o remount,rw / doesn't work? Is the bash# asking for a certain drive or partition to mount?

I can log in but I do not understand the command its asking for to remount it as read-write? Please see attached for screen shots.. Thank you, Eric

VDP Logs and Troubleshooting.

Hi All

I have been using VDP for a few weeks now and it has been running without too many issues. In the last day or so I have seeing backups fail on 2 of my appliances. I would like to know the reason for the failure so I putty to the appliacne and started to look through the logs in /usr/local/avamarclient/var-proxy-x but I am finding it extremely difficult, none of the logs are labeled with the friendly VM names but insteand the log file names use the vCenter machine ID or some such identifier. I was wondering if somone could give some assistance with

1. Easiest way to find the log for a particular VM

2. What are the best logs to look at to ascertain the actual reason for the backup failure

If anyone has any other tips and tricks for interpreting the logs please let me know.

Thanks a lot guys,

Stuck on 5.0 because I don't want VDP...5.5 version any better?

Running a 5.0 environment with VDR 2.0.1 and while it is not great, for the most part it works.  After reading so many horror stories and limitations with VDP I have been avoiding 5.1 updates but with 5.5 out I do not want to get too far behind.

I would prefer not to have to justify a 3rd party application so I am willing to give VDP a try, but would like to hear from the community as to their opinion on the state of the product.  If anyone knows of a way to get VDR working with 5.5 I would love to hear it even though I know it is not officially supported.

Thanks for everyone's time.

Last hfscheck failed with result MSG_ERR_HFSCHECKERRORS

Hi,

For few days VDP has not been able to complete integrity check launched from

web client so I tried running it manually:

1. Stop all VDP services (dpnctl stop)

2. Unmount the mount point (umount /data0X)

3. Run xfs_check (xfs_check /dev/sdxy)

4. Mount data0X (mount -a)

5. start services (dpnctl start all)

6. stop maintenance services (dpnctl stop maint)

7. create checkpoint (avmaint checkpoint --ava)

8. Run full hfscheck (avmaint hfscheck --full --ava)

8b. check hfscheck (avmaint hfscheckstatus --ava)

9. Start maint (dpnctl start maint)

Ref: https://communities.vmware.com/message/2271165

But every time I end up with error:

Last hfscheck failed with result MSG_ERR_HFSCHECKERRORS : started Tue Jan 14 16:02:19 2014 ended Tue Jan 14 20:42:22 2014, nodes queried/replied/total(1/1/1)

VDP version is 5.5.5.180

Any ideas what to try next?

Clean install is also possible, but I'd like to know the root cause for this and avoid it in the future.

Thanks!

VM Backup strategy

Hi All,

I have just set up ESXi on my server and I will be running a few VMs as a home lab. I have 4 HDDs and since my server only has software RAID ESX doesn't work with this.

How else can I back up my VMs? I would like to back up to another drive within my server. I don't mind if it's a manual job or if it's a bit messy. Would like a free solution if possible.

what are your thoughts?

Thanks!

Problem with FLR with vmware data protection 5.1

$

Hallo,

We have a problem with our vdp and after two days of reading manuals and kb article we dont know what to do anymore.

We have ESX 5.1 and vCenter 5.1 and using also the 2TB Data Protection 5.1.

The VDP is working to backup the hole machines and also to recover them without a problem.

But if we want to use the FLR option it doesn't work and we have no clue why.

What we tested right now was for example we made a backup from our vcenter and than from the vcenter we tryed to access the https:vdp-ip:8543/flr/ on the webinterface we tried the basic login and also the advanced login but both don't work.

We always get the message : "login failed cannot find vm at ip-of-vm".

We checked the firewall it is off. We also tried it from another client but no success and we can also see under restore in the webclient from vcenter the restorepoint of the full backup machines.

In the webclient on the vc we also the data protection and can connect and work with it.

Has anybody a clue?

The basic login we tried with: local administrator user and password, with domain\administrator, localmachinename\administrator

The advanced login we tried with: domain\administrator (which is taken in the configuration of the vdp to connect to vc which is working).

noting want to working and we dont find a error or logfiles to work with it.

thx for any help in advance

best regards

VDP Appliance configuration - registering with vCenter fails. Possible to connect with remote vCenter?

$

Hi,

I want to deploy a VDP Appliance and connect it to a remote vCenter, that is, not the one on which the appliance is deployed. Say I have deployed the ova template in vCenter1, but during the configuration I want to connect it to vCenter2. The reason behind this is, that the whole environment managed by vCenter2 is very small and I don't want to deploy a 1TB+ appliance there. Both vCenters run in the same DC, so there are no communication or latency issues, also - the VM that vCenter2 is running on is registered with the vCenter1.

During the configuration i get the "VDP not found in vCenter inventory" error (not using english browser version so this might be slightly different). From what I understand, during configuration the appliance wants to discover itself within the vCenter1 inventory, altohugh I have provided it with connection info for the vCenter2. An error is reported in the vami-ovf.log:

Veeam Bottleneck=Source

I'm using Veeam Backup & Recovery version 6.5 with VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1. The VM storage is local to the ESXi server in a RAID5 SAS array. Veeam is running on a separate physical machine and backing up over a 2 Gbps aggregated link, onto an external USB 2.0 hard drive.

Veeam seems to top out at about 22MB/s when performing a backup operation, and indicates that the bottleneck is the source. This seems too slow given the setup, and I'm wondering if I'm missing something. Can anyone shed any light on my situation?

I am preparing a design for a large virtual environment which has more than 2500 VMs. I am planning to provision VDPA for VM backup of non-production environment of Windows and Linux VMs.

Query #1: As per VDPA documentation, VDPA can take backup of maximum 8 VMs simultaneously, and maximum 10 VDPA appliances can be deployed per vCenter server. So, is it possible to tke backup of 80 VMs simultaneously per vCenter with 10 appliances ?

Query #2: What is the maximum I/O and Network through supported per VDPA applicance and per vCenter server (with 10 VDPA appliances) ?

Hi vSphere community,

Curious what people are doing to backup up physical ESXi servers?   We have IBM TSM, but I'm not sure it can backup an ESX Host.

Strictly looking at ESX host backups at the moment and not virtual machines.

Any suggestions or advice?

Thanks!

Hi All,

It’s the newbie who is in need of help once again.  We are running one host with VMware vSphere 5
Essentials with 5 hyper-V’s.  The Hyper-v’s
are all windows 2008 servers.

We were running the free VMWare ESXi version but upgrade to essentials
because I was told this would unlock the api’s to allow for backup of the
hyper-v’s also would be entitled to support.
Since Essentials does not come with support I’ve been searching the web
to find something within our budget (we have no budget) to backup/restore the
hyper-v’s.  I’ve looked into Carbonite…carbonite
cannot be install on ESXi this will not work; also looked at thinwave backup
click but does not accept my password and have read about vdp but it’s over
1k.  I thought I would ask the
communities for help on find a reasonable product.

CBT and migration of backup solution

Hi,

I have a question regarding cbt and backup.

Take the following example :

I backup my VMs with a backup solution using cbt (for example with Netbackup). I change my backup solution to backup my VMs (for example with Veeam).

Have  I to reset cut before backup my VMs with my new backup solution or not ?

Indeed I’m a little paranoid  regarding cbt….

Thank you in advance for your help !
