VDP 6.1.3.70   config screen "vCenter Registration" Fields are correct, test connection fails with message "Unable to connect to the provided SSO server/port combination. Please re-check values and try again."

Host ESXi 6.0 4600944

VCSA  6.0.0.20000

VCSA PSC 6.0.0.20000

Tested VDP login via web to VCSA, logs fine. Network adapters moved from DVS to standard switch, no change.

DNS entries have been checked.

All 3 VMs reside on same host.

Any help? Any additional information needed?

Hello.. My VDP appliance is in a read-only state and will not boot into read-write.

I don't understand the command I think its asking for i.e. bash# mount -n -o remount,rw / doesn't work? Is the bash# asking for a certain drive or partition to mount?

I can log in but I do not understand the command its asking for to remount it as read-write? Please see attached for screen shots.. Thank you, Eric

VDP CPU Usage

Hi All,

I recently deployed a VDP appliance to replace VDR in our 5.1 enviroment, backing up through a FC EMC CX3-40f SATA array.

As soon as I setup the appliance (which was a nightmare due to the DNS error message!), CPU usage shot up to 2-3Ghz and stayed this way throughout the day. Bear in mind this was with no backup job configured, and there was little disk IO during this period.

I logged in to the appliance using SSH, and using top, found that the Java processes are taking up most of the CPU - along with intermittant bursts from "gsan".

I then setup and kicked off a backup of our enviroment after hours, and saw that the CPU usage shot up to 10GHz - I had to stop it to stop it affecting other VMs.

I understand that this product will require heavy resources due to the dedup, but is this really normal behaviour? It's maxing out an HP G7 blade at the moment!

I have tried combinations of 1 - 4 vCPU, upping the memory to 16Gb and updating Tools.

Anyone else seeing similar behaviour, or have any advice?

Can VDP send syslog events?

$

I've been unable to determine if the VDP software can send events/logs to a syslog server.  I've checked all the documentation I can find and multiple searches on Google and VMware's forums, but have come up empty.  I know you can grab the archive of all the logs, but that is not exactly easy to monitor.

Anyone know if it is possible with minimal of configuration/modification of the VM?

Thanks!

vdp state admin in version 6.1.4

Hi,

Recently I upgraded to version 6.1.4 and seems to be I began to get all sort of errors. This one I see more often:

09/22/2017 01:12:30: Backup job named "job3" completed.

09/22/2017 01:02:39: Appliance has changed from "Full Access" to "Admin".  Backup functionality is no longer available.

09/22/2017 01:00:30: Backup job named "job3" started.

Checking #dpnctl status:

dpnctl: INFO: gsan status: degraded
all other services are up.

How to get instance to normal state ?

VDP EOA

VMWare announced the End of Availability (EOA) of VMware Data Protection (2149614).

This is quite disappointing, as many customers might have opted for using VDP after the announcement that VMware vSphere Data Protection Advanced became part of VMware vSphere (and did no longer require purchase of a separate license):

"Starting March 1, 2015, VMware vSphere Data Protection Advanced will be consolidated into VMware vSphere Data Protection ... All functionality available with vSphere Data Protection Advanced, previously available as a standalone product, is now included in VMware vSphere Data Protection 6.0."

If I understand it correctly, customers that are using VDP now need to change their backup policies and again need to purchase from VMWare:

"Beginning today, Dell EMC is offering you a complimentary migration to the more robust and scalable Dell EMC Avamar Virtual Edition."

Comments welcome!

Crash Consistent and application consistent backup for the same job

$

I'm using VDP 6.1 in ESXi 6 environment cluster to backup virtual machines and I noted the same Windows guest OS has different kind of backup:

Crash Consistent or application consistent backup

E.g. the same job for Windows 2008 sometimes gets Crash Consistent backup and it sometimes get application consistent backup?

So logs show for some day "application consistent backup and for other days "Crash Consistent backup"

What is the reason to get different types of backup for the same job? In this server there is no database.

thanks

Using Snapshots on Domain Controllers safe or not - depends on situation??

$

A lot has been said about problems with using snapshots with Domain Controllers and most of what has been said simply translates to

"DO NOT DO IT!"

However, based on how things work and why the problems happen I am not sure that this statement applies to all cases.

USN rollback is caused when you revert a single DC back and the USN number of the local copy is lets say 10 but on its replica partner has the reverted DCs USN of 20. Some people ask the question "well how is it that when i restore a DC from a backup i bring it to same state reverting USN and this is not an issue" for one the database invocation ID is changed on restore and the system marks the server and database as restored and thus knows how to proceed with proper replication. This is obviously not the case with snapshot revert.

Now for questions I have to confirm my theory:

CASE 1

so what happens when you have a single DC environment or SBS system? I would this that in the single DC system the snapshots should be perfectly ok for  Domain Controller as it has no replication partner....Can anyone at VMware confirm this??

CASE 2

Also what if you have 2 DC's and you want to use snapshot prior to an upgrade and do the following:

   1. shutdown replication between servers using "repadmin /options +DISABLE_OUTBOUND_REPL"

   2. Take a snapshot of both servers and enable replication back.

and then if something goes wrong you should be able to safely revert backup IF and ONLY IF you revert BOTH DC's back to the same state and enable replication back as it was disabled during snapshot.

Above 2 cases i would think should be ok and would not cause any USN rollback issues or cause any problems on the domain. Can anyone confirm this as i have not had the chance to test it and even if i do you never really know 100% if any damage occurs in database level even if all checks come back good.

Vmware Data Protection - Backup done but email notification shows failed

Hi,

I'm using VDP to backup a Vcenter Linux Appliance amongst other VM, on a Vsphere 5.5 infrastructure.

Everything was just fine until the day the email notification indicated that de backup of my vmware appliance failed on every single backup (all the other vms are ok).

When I look further I realise that the backup is actually ok. I extracted the logs of failed clients from VDP web interface.

In the log there is only 1 warning.

Here is my log (warning in red...).

snapshots, VMware Tools, VSS and application consistency

$

I'm trying to understand if a snapshots of a windows 2008 R2 VM that's running inside an ESXi 5.1 with  just a scsi disk is application consistent or not.

Reading here it seems yes, it's app consistent but there's a couple of things that I do not understand.

What does it mean: Restore must be done using the backup application’s guest agent. https://communities.vmware.com/The vSphere APIs for Data Protection provide no host agent support for this.

If I restore the entire VM, is this consistent or not?

We can’t make quiesced VMware Snapshots on a VM with Exchange 2010 in a RDM LUN

$

Hallo,

first i must say, that we don't need a backup of the Exchange 2010 enviroment, this will be taken with NetApp SnapManager for Exchange.

But the OS VMDK files are on a NFS Datastore and this should be backed up by SnapManager VI.

But if i try to create a quiesced Snapshot of the VM i got this errors:

Der Fehlercode lautet: 3 Die Fehlermeldung lautet: Error when notifying the sync provider.

After i tryed to make a SnapShot i got this result in „vssadmin list writers“

Writer name: 'Microsoft Exchange Replica Writer'

   Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7}

   Writer Instance Id: {a07f7d02-edb2-45a4-aa62-b1360f6067cd}

   State: [8] Failed

   Last error: Retryable error

Writer name: 'Microsoft Exchange Writer'

   Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7}

   Writer Instance Id: {4e8c2d55-eaa5-4d63-b680-2763f4a95366}

   State: [8] Failed

   Last error: Retryable error

And some other writers are reorting a timeout.

We tryed already to exclude the Exchange VSS Writers from the VMware Tools like described in the KB article: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1007696

But this didn’t work perhaps because we have ESXi 5.0 and the article is only up to ESXi 4.1.

Is there a way to get a quiesced VMware Snapshot only from the operating system?

Best regards

Stefan

Backup fails due to quiescing

Hello

Since upgrading our environment from 5.0 to 5.1 we are having problems backing up several VM's

We use the Netvault Backup, with the VMware Plugin, to backup our VM's

When a backup job is run overnight, one VM fails, with the following message:

Task to create VM snapshot failed with reason 'An error occurred while quiescing the virtual machine. See the virtual machine's event log for details.'

I check the VM's event log and the following is displayed

The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 4 The error message was: Quiesce aborted.

The following is what I have tried to fix the problem, all failed:

  • Remove and reinstall VMware Tools on the VM approx 5 times in a row
  • Remove VMware Tools and reinstall without the VSS option
  • Disable VSS backup from within Netvault
  • Manual snapshot of the VM will sometimes work and sometimes fail

We have a backup job that runs every night Monday - THursday, which backs up approx 10 VM's, with 1 failing with the error message.

On a Friday night we have 2 backups jobs that run, which backup a total of approx 30 VM's, with 7 VM's failing with the error message

Any ideas how I can fix this problem?  It's been suggested its something to do with Datastore storms but everything was working before the upgrade to 5.1

Thanks in advance

Andrew

another task is already in progress

We have using CA Arcserve and VCB to perform the backup of VM's

Recently i've noticed that some VM's are no longer reporting performance data in the "Performance" Tab of VCenter.

Furthering digging, show the account used to perform the backup snapshots is causing an an error "Another task is already in progress"

I suspect one of back jobs has been cancelled and the snapshot 'clean up'process that arcserve uses has left the VM in some state....other than normal.

What steps can I take to fix this error...i've tried rebooting the VM but this don't fix the issue.

Extending VDP Advanced 6.0.2.4 appliance storage

Hi,

I've got a couple of VDP appliances  (Version 6.0.2.4) close to capacity. I know there's an option of the gui to 'Extend Storage'. I've got each of the appliance data disk on separate 2.5TB datastores and each VMDK is currently only 1TB so there's plenty of room for growth. Are there any pre-reqs I should perform before executing extend storage? Do I need to stop any housekeeping running? I've that sometimes this process can fail and require intervention directly on the appliance.

thanks

Adam.

Crash-consistent backups in VDP

Hi everybody

I have installed the vSphere Data Protection 6.1 and since few days the backup of a VM is "crash-consistent". The other VMs don't have this problem and all the backups are "application-consistent".

What is the meaning of this type of backup?

What can I do to solve this issue?

Thx in advance, sincerely Omar

VDP advanced 5.8 only sees system databases in SQL Server 2014, and fails during attempted backup

We upgraded to VDP advanced 5.8 today and installed the new SQL agent in 3 different SQL servers.  The two SQL Server 2008 machines work fine with VDP-- it can see all the databases.

But when I try to create a backup of the SQL Server 2014 machine, by selecting individual databases, the VDP appliance (as controlled through vSphere Web Client) only sees the three system databases

Master, MSDB, and Temp.  And when I tried to backup the Master database, the process failed with a non-explanatory miscellaneous error.

Is there something special about setting up SQL Server 2014 to be backed up by VDP advanced?

I was attempting to increase disk size on the primary disk of a VM. I followed instructions to delete all snapshots. After I noticed that the disk type went from Thin provisioned to Thick provisioned. After increasing the disk size in the VM properties I powered on the machine and received multiple errors:

An error was received from the ESX host while powering on VM <NAME>.

Failed to start the virtual machine.

I have attempted to follow the instructions to recreate the vmdk file, but have had no success. Is there any other option to get this machine back?

Hi,

I just deployed VDP Appliance 6.1 into our ESXi 5.5 host. Everything's running smoothly (backup-restore VM Image, File Level Restore, Backup verification etc.), but there is one issue: when I want to create Backup Job for SQL Server Database, there are several SQL Servers (computer name) showing up on drop down, but i couldn't see all the databases.

I suspect the problem might on the permission, i have tried this tips https://communities.vmware.com/thread/491546?start=0&tstart=0 with no luck.
