Whenever I run the Data Recovery backup job  it creats the VM snapshop and then immediately removes it and fails with the following errors:

6/2/2009 9:11:24 PM: Normal backup using Backup Job 1

6/2/2009 9:13:22 PM: Failed to create snapshot for VM1, error -3902 ( file access error)

6/2/2009 9:13:22 PM: Task incomplete

This happens for any VM.

Does anyone have an idea why it fails?

Thanks in advance,

Roy

VDP Backup job failed E10057

Hi

Off-site backup with VDP?

So currently we have vSphere Essentials Plus, with 3 ESXi 5.1 host machines, a dedicated vCenter Server and a ReadyNAS 3200. I'm using VMware Data Protection to do backups of each of the VMs each day, however the appliance is also running from the ReadyNAS 3200.

As an additional disaster-recovery step, I need all of the VDP created restore points to be available on a little ReadyNAS Pro 4, that will eventually be hosted off-site, in case of fire / flooding / etc.

How do I go about achieving this? The VDP appliance can only backup to it's own internal appliance storage. Doing an Rsync of the entire ReadyNAS 3200 vm directory not only seems like a massive waste of time (it'll take ages), it also probably(?) wont be a working backup as the files are constantly changing whilst they are still being backed up (I believe I'm correct in saying that?).

So how does one do off-site backups!?

VMWare tools quiescence in linux

I was wondering if anyone could tell me a little more about VMWare tools quiescence. I'm talking about how vmware tools will automatically run the scripts;

/usr/sbin/pre-freeze-script
/usr/sbin/post-thaw-script

Does anyone know how these are run and by whom? i.e. does vmware tools create a console session and run as the user we installed vmware tools with i.e. root?

Thanks

Using Vmware Data Recovery without Vcenter

Hello

I am lead to believe that you can use VDR to restore backups without Vcenter server. Since my Vcenter server is Virtualised in a DR scenario I would need to recover this backup using VDR.

Can this be done if so how?

I have set up an ESX machine and installed the plugin and deployed the appliance but I cant connect to the appliance in the Vmware Client.

Thanks

Clone fails with error: error caused by file vm/vm-0000002.vmdk

I was trying to make backup to a the vcenter vm with Veeam B&R 6.5 last patch, and i got the followed error: timed out waiting for all VDDK disks to close, so i tried to fix the error restarting managment agents on the host, consolidating the disk on the vm but nothing help.

So, i tried to clone the vm to make sure no vmdk are damage or are not working properly but when i try to do it, i get the error: error caused by file vm/vm-000002.vmdk, i can´t find that file browsing the datastore.

What should I do?? We are working with vSphere 5.0

Virtual Machine backup and recovery.

Hi,

We have VSphere 5.0 and would like to find easy way to backup virtual machines not only file level but in case of some problems we would like to be able to easy  restore virtual machine as cost of having virtual machine down is way more expensive than any software.

I had few good reviews on Veeam backup and recovery so my question would be what would be the best software to do virtual machine backup. Price is not an issue here as having one VM down for 3 hours may cost hundreds of thousands.

What would you recoomend it may be Vmware solution or third party doesnt matter.

When I try to registration a new VDP 5.5 on vCenter 5.5 I have the error: Unable to find this VDP in the vCenter inventory.

For user, I have used "administrator@vsphere.local" or "vsphere.local\administrator" or "mydomain\administrator" and the correct password for all user. I don't understand where is the problem. The vCenter is on the windows 2008R2 64bit and I have deployed the VDP from webclient and vsphere client into different tests.

Please help me!

Thanks!

VDP Remove and Install to new host

Hi - I am currently running VDP 5.1 on an old ESXi 5.1 host.

I have bought a new ESXi host running 5.1 U1

I would like to upgrade to VDP 5.5.1 but would rather install a fresh copy of VDP 5.5.1 on the new server and not upgrade or move the old VDP 5.1

However... I would like to keep the old VDP 5.1 just in case I ever need to go back to it for some unforeseen reason (highly unlikely). I don't mind starting a fresh backup routine/database with the new 5.5.1.

How can I uninstall 5.1 from my vCenter 5.1 U1 server without deleting the existing backups and then install a fresh VDP 5.5.1 with a brand new database?

The following KB explains how to uninstall VDP but its deletes all the backup data ( VMware KB: Uninstalling vSphere Data Protection from vCenter Server )

How Can I remove VDP from vCenter without actually deleting the data and then also install VDP 5.5 on the same vCenter but to an new ESXi host?

Thanks,

Exporting OVF Templates Times Out

I have been trying to export an OVF template using the vSphere Client Version 4.1.0 Build 258902 of a VM from an ESXi server running 4.1.0 Build 260247 using a licensed version of vSphere 4 Standard.  On some of my VMs, I can export them fine.  However, I have a couple that timeout.  For the ones that fail, I get the popup progress dialog that provides esitmates of time, etc., and it proceeds for a time and them just times out.  It gets about 35% done before I get the error "Failed to export Virtual Machine:  The operation timed out".  The time of duration of my last try was about 16.5 minutes.

The image I am having problems with as provisioned storage of 204 GB, and used storage of 10.63 GB.  Guest OS is Ubuntu 10.04.2 64 bit, but I doubt that is the issue.  VM version is 7.  CPU 3 and memory is 4 GB.  I stopped the VM before exporting it, and it does not have any snapshots yet taken of it.

I have noticed a couple other threads asking for help on this topic with no answers, so I have started another thread to hopefully get somebody's notice.  There seem to be a few others out there with this issue.

I would download the files directly via browsing the datastore, but that seems to take a crazy amount of time to do ... literally hours and hours.

Here is a section of the system logs:

VDP: [004] The VDP appliance datastore is approaching maximum capacity

Hi,

I've got this alarm "VDP: [004] The VDP appliance datastore is approaching maximum capacity" because the datastore where i have the VDP virtual disks is almost with the exact size of the virtual disks.

I've disabled the alarm, but everytime i reboot the VDP appliance the alarm recreated and enabled.

Is there any way to make VDP not recreate this alarm definition?

Need recommendations for a backup & recovery

Hi All,

It’s the newbie who is in need of help once again.  We are running one host with VMware vSphere 5
Essentials with 5 hyper-V’s.  The Hyper-v’s
are all windows 2008 servers.

We were running the free VMWare ESXi version but upgrade to essentials
because I was told this would unlock the api’s to allow for backup of the
hyper-v’s also would be entitled to support.
Since Essentials does not come with support I’ve been searching the web
to find something within our budget (we have no budget) to backup/restore the
hyper-v’s.  I’ve looked into Carbonite…carbonite
cannot be install on ESXi this will not work; also looked at thinwave backup
click but does not accept my password and have read about vdp but it’s over
1k.  I thought I would ask the
communities for help on find a reasonable product.

Ok community what do you recommend.

Hi,

We use  VMware ESXI version 4.1.0 as a host with vSphere Client Version 4.1.0. There  are guests with Windows 2003 Srv and Windows 2008R2 Srv.

The backup runs on another Windows 2008R2 with CA Arcserver Backup r15.0 (Build 6222)

The agent for Virtual MAchines is installed.

Running the backup for the guests I receive the error mentioned above.

vDP Restore Fails On Machine under vSphere Replication

We have several VMs that are configured to use vSphere Replication.

I backed up one of these, and did a trial restore, after a few seconds it fails with the error:

"Invalid or unsupported virtual machine configuration" and the error stack says:

"vSphere Replication does not support changing the length of a replicated disk"

Now at the moment, we're kind of screwed, since the DR site is not accessible, there's no way to actually remove the replication settings from the VM, since as soon as I try I get a "VR appliances should be installed and configured on both sites, paired, and connected in order to configure replication".

Great, thanks a lot, so not only is my replication down, but I can't even do backups?

So, why is the error happening when I try to do a restore? Why is vSphere replication even being mentioned? I thought vDP was entirely independent of replication, but it appears not. Any clues?
