I have a specific VM (Windows 2008 R2 64-bit) where the snapshot is getting stuck "in progress" when VDR 2.0 (latest version) runs on it. This just started happening after months of having the backups on this machine run just fine (yes, I know this means next to nothing).
When I send a command via VDR to stop the backup, it doesn't get stopped. The only way to clear it is to either restart the VM itself or restart the VMware shadow copy service. After a *FULL* restart I can run a backup on the VM and everything completes just fine, including the snapshot of the VM. It seems that the next time the backup runs on that VM though, I run into the same issue. I'm not 100% sure of that pattern since it just started doing it on Saturday and it's now just Monday, but obviously something is going on.
In the log for the troubled VM I found this:
2011-12-02T00:00:20.671Z| vcpu-0| ToolsBackup: successfully mounted writable snapshot in guest.
2011-12-02T00:15:01.266Z| vmx| [msg.snapshot.quiesce.timeout] Timed out while quiescing the virtual machine.
FWIW, I'm running ESXi 5.0 with the latest hardware version and VMware Tools installed.
Any ideas?
**UPDATE**
I am going to try modifying the VMware Tools installation per this post: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/323252?tstart=0
I won't be able to do a restart until late this evening and won't know if it works until tomorrow.
