Backup performance ESXi 5.5

Hi All

I am wondering what sort of backup performance people get when performing RAW VM backups..

I have a standalone ESXi host with direct attached storage, SAS disks.  I am backing up VMs successfully but i note the performance seems quite average.  HP DL380Gen8 hardware with 4 physical 1G network boards, teamed configuration (both ESXi and the Cisco switch).  No performance issues with hosts moving around data.  Unicast conversations from end user machiness to any VM hosts can MAX out a single 1G interface easily, as expected with Ether channel configurations.  So i don't suspect any network dramas.

During backup - network traffic averages around 250 Mbit/sec (31MB/sec) performance.  During backup of an individual host file set (files on the VM, not RAW), using Arcserve 16.5 agent software, performance is fast and close to 8-900Mbit/sec,  During backup of RAW VMs, the performance is slow, with Arcserve reporting throughput average at 1600M/minute  I was expecting around 4000M/minute.  Testing with antivirus software turned off on both hosts.  Don't suspect that.

Does anyone have any tips with tuning the ESXi side of things for better throughput ?

Cheers

Mal
