I've been looking for documentation on the best setup for my VDP Advanced backup server. I'm not having too much luck and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I'm probably way overthinking this which is why I'm looking for some comments.
I have 1 vSphere 5 vHost that is currently hosting an Exchange 2010 Mailbox server with mailbox storage hosted on a EMC SAN. The vHost has 2 vSwitches.
vSwitch1: iSCSI Network w/ 10.1.0.* round robin access to the EMC SAN
vswitch2: VM Production Access w/ 192.168.1.*
The Exchange Mailbox Server VM has access to both vSwitch1 for SAN Communication and vSwitch2 for Public Access.
We purchased a separate 6TB Storage Device that will be connected via iSCSI for Backup Storage. I want to install the VDP Advanced Appliance and utilize this Backup Device. It will be setup on the same vHost as the Exchange server.
Where I'm struggling with the documentation is where my best options would be to place the VDP Advanced server on the network so it can perform isolated backups.
From what I'm reading, I will need to at least place it on vSwitch2 (192.168.1.*) so it can resolve internal DNS.
Do I need to add it onto vSwitch1 so it can directly access the SAN Storage? Or perhaps create another vSwitch that has access to the SAN, Exchange, VDPA and the Backup Storage Device? During setup, it only allows me to setup 1 IP on the server.
Can anyone provide some direction? Thanks ahead of time.
