Manual backup and restoration of vCenter 5.1

Folks --

Will the new SSO facility change the way we are to restore the vCenter 5.1 server? Are the instructions in KB 1023985 still valid for vCenter 5.1?

We have installed vCenter 5.1 on a W2K8_R2_x64 VM. We're using the MSSQL Express, with the database located on the same VM as vCenter server.

We're backing up the VIM_VCDB and the VIM_UMDB databases (we have the Update Manager installed on this same VM). We've also backed up the SSL certificate folder.

Do we need to backup the RSA database used by SSO?

From my understanding, the restoration steps are:

1. Install Windows Server 2008 R2. Use the same FQDN and ip_addr.

2. Install the MSSQL Express package.

Use the installer on the vCenter 5.1 media DVD image at redist\SQLEXPR\SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe

3. Install the MSSQL Management Studio.

4. Use the Management Studio application to restore the two databases: VIM_VCDB and VIM_UMDB.

5. Restore the SSL certificate folder.

For W2K8 R2, this is located at:

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\VMWare\VMware VirtualCenter

6. Create a System DSN

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC)

Driver: SQL Server Native Client 10.0

Name: VMware vCenter
Description: VMware VirtualCenter Repository Data Source

Server: localhost\VIM_SQLEXP

7. Install vCenter server using DVD.

Will the installer automatically detect the existing vCenter database? Or will we have to select "Use an existing supported database"? Are there any caveats as to connecting to the system DSN? Do we have to provide a user name/password for DSN?

8. Done

Or are there additional steps to be taken?

I'm planning on doing a dry run by powering down the vCenter VM and doing the above steps for a test restoration. Will there be any problems by going back and forth between the original and the restored vCenter server?

Any additional information or help would be greatly appreciated.
